I just found my new everyday red a few days ago-- Revlon ColorStay in Red Velvet... it does have teensy little sparkles in it, but they're not that obvious. It's a nice matte that wears reasonably well. Its the best red I've found for my coloring so far!

Thanks! Actually, the shade in that photo is Rage, not Russian Red. Rage is a darker, more subtle color. The Russian Red is almost exactly the same color as Besame's Red Velvet.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I just put my hair in Hot Sticks (the bigger ones for the top layers, the small ones for the underneath layers, rolling them under), let them cool and then brushed them out a bit. I'm in the process of growing my bangs out so I just sorta pull them back and fluff em up, and then use a comb on the other side of my hair.

Do any of the UK ladies know of a good brick red colour lippy. Preferably in a lip stain as I hate it when my lipstick bleeds now Im no longer a youngster

There's a color I'm trying from lola cosmetics called Bitten that might just be the thing for you.

Their website lists http://www.powdersandpotions.com/brand/Lola+Cosmetics.html as carrying the brand in the UK.

eta: the brand is L-o-l-a, one word, no hyphens but for some reason it comes up as a smiley in my message. On second thought, I think it is much more of a wine color than brick. Sorry!

Hi Kerry, Chanel "Fire" is a great colour, I've bought it for myself and as a present for a friend and it looks good on both warm and cool skin tones. You should be able to get it at any of the big department stores like John Lewis etc. I don't know if it will be enough of a brick red but it may be worth while going to have a look. It is expensive but it just gorgeous and smells of roses too and I've never had it bleed.! There is the matching nail polish too if you are feeling extravagant. Also Clinique make a lipstick that I think is actually called "Brick" I'm not sure what colour it actually comes out but it may be worth a look.

I'm wondering if anyone here knows of any other Chanel classic reds that may still be available? I have a couple of MAC colours and one Chanel and wanted to add to my Chanel reds. I'm after anything that has no cerise or magenta in it. Any suggestions ladies?

I can never be loyal to just one red these days it seems but Chanel Rouge Star (No 22) was my signature red for years. It was either renamed in the US or discontinued. One day I stopped to pick up a tube and it was gone. I've done searches and it still comes up on various Japanese and French websites but I never pursued it further. It was/is a true red. It could just be nostalgia speaking but if you can find it in the UK, I would give it a try. My other favorite Chanel is Russet Moon.

How to color lips

Find the best lipstick shade for you and apply it like an artist;
Choosing a great lipstick shade is more about your personal style and preference than hard rules. For a no-fail, natural-looking lipstick, factor in the coloring of your skin, your hair and your lips (this is why a lipstick color that looks great on your friends lips doesn't always look so good on you).
The Most flattering shade will be one or two tones darker than your lips. If you are fair-skinned, choose shades of beige, pale pink and light coral. Medium skin tones look great in brown-based hues of rose, mauve and berry. Pick deep plum, chocolate or red if you have dark skin.
Start with smooth lips. If you have dry flakes, gently exfoliate them with a damp washcloth. Then moisturize your mouth with lip balm. Neutral colors and sheer formulas can be applied directly from the tube. Use a brush for darker and brighter colors that require precise application. for natural-looking definition and to keep color from feathering, line lips with a lip pencil after applying color. Soften and blend harsh edges with a lip brush.

i've actually had better luck lining and filling in lips with a neutral pencil before applying lipstick. this is the technique recommended in "Making Faces". never had luck lining after applying lipstick. i think different things just work for different people.

I actually do a bit of both...I like to line and fill in lips (this way I've learned that when the lipstick wears off, your not stuck to just liner

) but I also, depending on if the lipstick is dark, go over the lip line with a pencil for a more defined look.

That's a Jemma Kidd lipstick, called Scarlet. Actually, I think it's Scarlett, as in O'Hara, which is kind of dumb because I don't think that nice girls in the 1860s swanned around in scarlet lipstick, as a rule.

I don't have a picture, but I picked up a tube of L'Oreal's "Penelope" today and I love it! It's a nice summer red, slightly warm tone and it's creamy but not too thick. Blotted it has a nice matte.

ohh i have that but only wore it once. i went off it because it was too shiny and looked a bit too cheap for me. it never occurred to me that blotting it would look good (remove enough of the shine but leave enough of the colour). i'll give it a go.

Emma, my mother taught me a trick for matte .. take a single square of toilet tissue and pull the plys apart, using one very thin ply, place it on your lips as if you were going to blot .. then with a loaded powder brush dap over the tissue onto your lips. The powder will lightly dust the surface creating a nice matte finish.
