in need of a summer hat

it is about time i put my black fedora away for summer. but first, i need a good quality summer hat. i am thinking straw, but i am not sure. anyone have any suggestions? also, pics would be mighty helpful.

If you are just using it for light use (house to car, car to work, heading to the park on the weekend) Just about any hat will do.

If you want sun protection it should have a brim at least 3" wide of wider, made of a material that blocks UV rays.

I am personally partial to Akubra's and they offer lots of styles that suit just about any purpose. But I also appreciate a hat I don't have to baby.

The ubiquitous Panama of any style can't be beat in my opinion. There are decent name brand non-Panama straws of all types out there too. Most are inexpensive. Cruise Ebay for a while and watch what goes for what and don't spend too much.

I couldn't agree more, cruise ebay. I just got a beautiful Milan for less than $30 (Brand New), also just found a 2 for 1 deal Vintage Straw Biltmore is one of them.....got 'em both for less than $25, (condtion= excellent).

Yeah Bolt I got an vintage Ecuadorian Panama last year for $12, a vintage Resistol Panama for $6 and a Dobbs narrow brim Milan weave for $6 all off Ebay!!

Maybe I'm just lucky, but it seems like every other hat I look at is 6 7/8... especially very old ones. It also seems to be the most common size of bowler hats that I run into.
