White safari-style shirt

Attention, all you adventure types! Orvis is having their post X-mas sale, and the India Officer's Shirt is on sale for $39.

I came across it in my ongoing search for a safari-tyle shirt in white. Anyone know of some good sources? My main requirement is that it be a tall, which, alas, the India Officer's Shirt does not offer. Though there are plenty of great safari shirts in various shades of khaki and green that come in tall sizes, I've got all of those that I really need!

Jack, I would be very surprised if you needed a tall shirt in Orvis sizes. My reasoning is that Orvis, like LL Bean, makes shirts for the somewhat generously proportioned among us, and you, Good Sir, are not.

Get the Large regular. It should fit. If it doesn't send it back, but I would be very surprised. A tall would have tails to your knees.

Thanks! Sadly, however, I did have it. You are right, though; I do have that problem with the tails, but those at least can be hidden (or tailored)!

I usually wear a large-tall in LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, and others to get a good fit in the shoulders and sleeves. Then I end up spending $10 on every shirt to have the waist taken in, usually by about 4-5 inches. My tailor keeps telling me that my shirt ballooning out at the waist is "just the style!" lol

Well the trend towards safari style shirts seems to be increasing, as the story posted by Mike K. predicted, but so far they all seem grossly over priced! Maybe it's just what shirts cost today, but here's the selection of white safari shirts in tall I've found just recently:

Banana Republic:
Heritage linen military-style shirt

Poplin military-style shirt

J. Crew:
Washed Irish linen camp shirt

Now, do I want to choke down the $70 for one of these shirts, or wait and hope they go on sale?

Well, you know that they'll be heavily discounted in August. [huh] You might check EBay for this ilk.

Yeah, my brain tells me to wait, but I've been looking for something similar for so long that I'm ready to go, man! So often men's shirts don't go on sale, though, because they know they'll sell them again next year. I can wait and hope, I guess. I just balk at paying $70 for a shirt I want to wear in the field. [huh]

If you get one of those shirts, buy linen.

Can't beat linen in the heat, as I'm sure you know. I love that fabric.

:whistling

If only the Orvis shirt came in size small... it's nice to be a little guy sometimes, but man if only my shoulders were a bit wider.

Cookie, if you do I want a full review!

I think the weight of linen would be great, but I'm a little leery of the sun protection. I think I could probably still get a sunburn under a linen shirt being out in the full desert sun for the better part of the day. For that reason I was leaning towards the twill, but I'd like a linen one just 'cause they're cool! (In both senses of the word!)

Jack, I've never suffered sun damage while wearing linen clothing. Linen is a fabric that has been used by desert dwellers since the beginning of time. [huh]

Greetings from Virginia. Even during my travels, I manage to find my way back to the Fedora Lounge.

Mojave - have you tried this one yet?
I know it's a blend material, but it's tough as nails. I used to have one for my uniform shirt.
Cabela's Long-Sleeve Safari Shirt (tall, stone color)
Item:IH-902475
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0018649902475a&type=product&cm_sz=Tall

I've tried the poly blends and find them way too hot to actually live in outside during the summer months. They wear well and don't look like a wrinkled mess, but I suffer from heat more than cotton drill or linnen. I'm going to try an Aertex fabric bush shirt this year and see how that works out.

Target has a shirt remarkably similar to the J.Crew, and they've been on clearance for $13 or so...

they don't have the "cuff keeper" on the sleeve, but they are similar in most aspects....

Thanks for the heads up, Duck and DVJ! Duck, I was looking at the Long Grass site, and though they're having some sales, they're out of all their talls. That short sleeve white shirt is still pretty tempting, though. DVJ, I've tried that shirt, too! I have gangly ape-like arms, and can't wear any shirt that's not a tall. Not without driving myself insane tugging the sleeves down all day, anyway. I appreciate the suggestions, though!

I love my Filson gear, too. My tin chaps have served me extremely well on digs in the think underbrush of Indiana and Pennsylvania, and the my new shorts are just the ticket for the upcoming summer. Alas, they don't make their shirts in tall, and though I've tried, I'm afraid I need that extra couple of inches.
