Doug C if you want a historic-type ex-mil rifle there is no end to what you can find for generally reasonable prices. My Mauser K-98 was rechambered for .30-06 which greatly makes ammo acquisition easier and cheaper. The Garrand is still obtainable though more expensive. Anything in .30-06 will give you power at a reasonable ammo price. .30-30 lever actions are great guns all stemming from the old western Henry & Winchester-style layout. again cheap obtainable ammo.

But for the sheer fun of plinking you can't beat a decent quality .22 semi-auto. Ammo is dirt cheap and found everywhere. The ubiqitous .22 can be handled by 10 year olds and women alike.
