I saw it! I was kinda disappointed overall, but there were some INCREDIBLE images and scenes. Batman is still the movie to beat this summer!
Oh yeah, get there early to see the King Kong trailer on the big screen!!

Nah...nothing to spill! Just my opinion! The group I went with was split down the middle, and those who loved it kept referring to the aforementioned great scenes. But for me, a bunch of cool scenes don't make a great movie!
And only half the theater applauding at the end told me I wasn't alone.

Thanks for the reply flat-top. I was joking with my wife and telling her that I just know all of Tom Cruise's wacky publicity is going to distract me from the movie! I'll be watching the movie thinking about Scientology, Katie Holmes, Tom jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch, etc... :p :p

With all his wacky behavior, I'm beginning to think Tom -is- an alien...
But as one character in 'Men in BlackI' said "Not a very good disguise..."

Kids again...

The film starts well, but I lost interest as it rolled on and on. Spielberg is a great enough film-maker that he can turn even B and sub-B material into something compelling, but why does he think that suspense is defined as "kids in danger". Enough freaking kids, man, it seems cheap and easy. If I wanted to see the Goonies I'd rent the Goonies.
:p :)

Why take a classic novel and not use any of the story? How cool would it have been if it was made in the era - 1890s. With the same effects as this new movie but the contrast between the alien technology and horse and carts etc. Its an ok movie if you nothing about H.G Well's novel but if you have read it, it's just a shame and left me asking why? why not use the original story.

I liked it but I just didn't buy Tom Cruise as a working class hero from Jersey. Maybe it's because I'm a native new yorker, maybe it's because of all the recent publicity, but probably it's just because Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, and can only act like what he is... pure hollywood. Worth seeing this summer for sure.

More Thoughts (Spoiler Alert)

Yawn, just OK. The original was better, never thought I'd be singing the praises of Gene Barry's acting. I wanted the aliens to grab the little girl to end her incessant screaming.

The lovely Mrs Fuente felt that the Tim Robbins Character was a gift from Speilberg to a fellow Leftest and his murder not neccessary to the plot and detremental to the character of the killer.

I saw it last night, and I thought it was fantasicly well done. Grade-a Film!

The story was good, with decent suspense and good special effects. However, i tend to be a very simplistic movie critic. Here is my scale.

Do I want that two hours of my life back? If so, how badly do I want it back?

And if it doesn't fit into either category and I enjoyed the couple hours, then it's a good movie :)

Cheers

I liked it but I also was wishing the aliens would grab that screaming girl sooner!
We had just seen one of the War of the Worlds sets at Universal Studios the day before (the jet) and I think that is what made the film work for my gal and I. I highly recommend seeing the studio tour just to see that set.
One suggestion I would have made is to use the sounds effects from the original film. Love the original film from '53, but it comes off a bit "churchy".
I'm sticking with Mr. and Mrs. Smith as a more enjoyable film than either Batman or War of the Worlds. (Even though I am a SCI-FI fan!)
