Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has a link to some sort of 20’s, 30’s and 40’s fashion guide with pictures of cloth people wore during those decades? I googled but couldn’t find anything with pictures or drawings. I’m specially interested in suits, hats, upper class, lower class, day, evening, office, casual, gala and the like. Is there any guide like that online? Thanks in advance.

All I can tell you is to be dilligent and search this forum; it's not easy but there's plenty to be found. May I also recommend to search threads started by Marc Chevalier; that fellow is the Maestro of vintage menswear as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Nonchalant. Thanks for the tips.
I actually searched before posting. But the info seems to be so broken down that makes it really hard to get the kind of understanding I'm looking for, which is a comprehensive picture of fashion during 20s 30s and 40s. Also, I didn't find nearly what I was looking for. Lots of pictures, but not much explanation etc. I guess everybody around here already know what they are looking at so no need to post much explanation. But I’m a newbe, so I float. ;)
I was just wondering, wit so many enthusiasts here, if anybody would know of a website wich has all the info in one place, maybe divided in decades. I had such a website bookmarked but my computer crashed and I lost my bookmarks when re-installing windows. :(
It was a website divided in decades and explaining what type of cloth, hats and etc people would wear and the difference between upper and lower class fashion in the different decades etc. It was a good site. But I googled and can no longer find it. Maybe it got taken down.
I'm checking the threads you pointed now. Thanks again.

Sadly, part of the Japanese consumer appeal of these classic designs is that they not be made available outside Japan. So there's a disincentive to market or make accessible outside the culture.

The flight jacket and denim crowd run up against this phenomenon all the time - along with the delibrately inflated retail prices that are (seriously!) another part of the consumer appeal over there. Knowing what they paid is worth a lot to the Japanese, so much so that just putting a style on clearance can end its popularity.

I'm the comprehension working on of this. New Yorker magazine having used to be making much funny of such type "translation" about differing language (most as special from being the Japanese) in bottom column paragraph filling stations. Great insides to be getting not found in other source of humors.
Most especial is oddness from created computer translation system gotten.

Just try auto-translating something into just any language, even one that's supposed to be closer to English, and then back into English.

I'm sure most of us have been mystified by this website at one time or another. Thanks for the attempt Mr. Cohen.

Revamp's website has something similar, but is mainly focused on women's wear, and about a paragraph spent on menswear.

If you live in the West Coast, (or not) check out Viva Las Vegas rockabilly weekender. Not only is there TONS of vintage vendors w/ 40's clothing, but I think more of the 40's stuff is being worn in the traditional rockabilly scene lately, along with the recent western swing insurgence.

I've read those Nolan pieces before, and have just re-read them. I am as underwhelmed as i was the first time. Generally has her facts straight but goes badly off the rails in several places. (Such as her rambling description of the "Palm Beach" suit. A mere two jacket styles for PB, apparently. And the multitude of fabrics! Palm Beach suits were made of "Palm Beach Cloth", a mixture of cotton, rayon and mohair - i forget the proportions. No more, no less. They came in all the variations of styles imaginable. I've seen many of them.)

And i recognise the crowd she's aiming her writing at, but come on. The zoot suit had absolutely no discernable lasting influence on general male fashion.

Unfortunately, these pieces tend to perpetuate more demonstrably false myths than they do correct information. This is a huge problem in the current offerings about 30s and 40s men's fashion.
