"NBC says it will not renew its contract to sell television shows through iTunes when that contract expires in December. And Apple says that's fine by them, even though NBC is the top supplier of video content for iTunes, with popular shows like The Office, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica."

30% of the top content, according to Apple.

But NBC wanted to jack up the price of their shows 150% and Apple says no. And Apple is ending the contract early so it doesn't end half way through a season (thus preventing making series available that would not be complete.)

Can't blame NBC for wanting to make their own price point. Can't blame Apple for wanting to keep its prices universal across the board.

What is NBC thinking though? $110 for a full season of shows that aren't even DVD quality? Dumb dumb dumb.

Makes no difference to me though, I get far superior quality episodes for free.

Thanks for the promo link, hadn't seen that yet. I guess this means it'll be back to bittorrent for Heroes and The Office...man, iTunes was sooo much more convenient, but if NBC WANTS to lose money, I guess that's on them.

So a media/entertainment company that has content gathering dust (already aired programming that has to wait for reruns/syndication), and someone presents a way to make money - actually getting people to pay to watch programming they can see for free. All gravy money at any price right? And they have no warehousing, shipping, in fact almost zero cost involved after digitization (which I believe Apple handles as well). It's like someone came along and said "hey, I'll give you $1.99 for each of your empty orange juice cartons."

And they sell that formerly fallow content by the jillions.

And they aren't happy? Are they on crack? Do they think they're going to set up their own content delivery system? Or that people will pay some other delivery system $5 a pop or something? iTunes "alternatives" spring up and die faster than fruit flies. Are they gonna get sucked into that DOA "rent" content model?

Rampant greed

Apple is the 3rd largest music retailer in the world. They gained their huge share because of their prices.

NBC's music division is no beter off in the over the counter world than anyone else's (can you hear the flushing sound). The music industry has been collapsing under the weight of its own greed for decades.

To the casual observer: Apple knows how to make money and NBC wants to change their business model. Apple needs to be about as scared of NBC as Honda fears Ford.

You can watch it on any size screen, and the new iMacs have 24 inch HD Displays.

Vertical Integration

I believe this is what they call vertical integration. Back about 90 years ago the big movie studios were able to control the production as well as distribution of their product. They owned the studio as as well as the theaters. Texas Instruments thought they could do this with their TI 99a computer. They nearly put themselves out of business in the process. It's as if the big companies want to hasten their own demise. It's also known as killing the goose that lays the golden egg. NBC must think they can create their own outlet system and charge ten times what the product is worth. Very hard to feel sorry for people this stupid, but it's an amazingly consistent pattern in human nature.

I think you nailed that analogy. The same guys who run General Motors must head up NBC.
