Ok...Here's my rant! Lady is sexist?

What's in a name...

I recall a line from "As You Like It"...."Oh gentle slut". According to my English teacher, in Shakespeare's day, the term referred to a naive woman.

Times do change. Seems that words can be symbols that become emotionally charged to some. I try to be driven by courtesy, and to be sensitive where my words may offend some. I also still get doors, but I'm not gender specific that way; I'll hold the door for a man as well as a woman.

In our PC world, the dictionary folks even neutered the term "guys". in the latest Webster, guys can refer to a group of women or men.

My personal opinion, lady is a mark of respect, not an indication of class. Behavior is a better indicator of the latter.

This is PC run amuck, as a few people have said. I am disgusted that "lady" would be construed in any way other than respectful. This is just a stupid, horrid overreaction. The only way to challenge it is for LADIES to write about this in newspaper columns, magazines, etc., and chide their "feminist" (!) sisters for rejecting a respectful term. CLEARLY it no longer means "helpless and in need of a man." It means something like elegant, respected and (sorry to use this word, Jovan) classy.

I have nothing but nausea for that particular brand of "feminists" and the "feminism" they preach. Why not do something useful like try to help women in countries where the gender disparity really is huge and there are real problems with respect for women. Like getting rocks thrown at you if your veil slips. This kind of nonsense only points to how few are the problems that these stunningly privileged "feminists" actually face.

If any of my students start to cop this line, I am going to let them have it. If they try to take this higher and the university rules against me, I will find the meanest conservative lawyers in the land and make this into a trial against the idiocy of PC. I'm extremely photogenic and I would love the exposure. Bring it on.

To me, the tone in which I am addressed matters more and is telling of the speaker's intent. If someone calls me a lady or addresses me as ma'am with a sarcastic tone...I will be offended. If someone calls me those things with respect, then I love it! lol
Then again, I am rarely addressed in public, so I don't have that problem.
As a member of the female gender (and left wing feminist nut job, hehe), I firmly uphold being called a lady, ma'am, and even miss.
