John Wayne was a huge star but a limited actor... however, in the right roles, he was just fantastic. Folks who are dubious about Wayne's acting ability should make a point of seeing Red River, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Shootist - just for starters.

I loved The Quiet Man. And Maureen O'Hara is just so beautiful in that movie.

I just watched Orlando this weekend with Tilda Swinton. It was amazing performance and a fairly good adaptation of Woolfe's novel, considering how convoluted the novel is.

:eek:fftopic:: No, not yet--but I am a serious student of clandestine-operations theory and practice. Not gonna give details, but if you knew how early I started, how fast I learned, where I was in knowledge before I even voted in my first election...

I'll tell you this, though: even for a non-BTDT, it doesn't make sleeping at night any easier.

Well, I'm going to see Across the Universe later this afternoon--very excited!--but last night I watched an episode of an old 70s British show, Danger UXB. If you haven't heard of it, try and find yourself a copy. It's a brilliant show starring Anthony Andrews (The Scarlet Pimpernel, Brideshead Revisited) about those stationed to disarm unexploded bombs during the Blitz. The series really gives a good feel for the times and the emotions of these soldiers who were stationed at home.

Lars Von Trier's Scottish film 'Breaking the Waves' was on again last night. It's an important film to watch if you into cinema. The subject matter may repel some, though. The acting is brilliant. I like every film Stellan Skarsgard appears in.

I caught up on some recent "literary" (i.e., films based on books) releases via library DVDs the last couple of nights: Little Children and Notes On A Scandal.

Both were pretty good, though neither quite lived up to the hype they got during their theatrical runs. (Now there's a surprise!) Both films were intelligent, well acted, and beautifully photographed... but both had (different) story problems in the last act and eventually went off the rails.

Still, watching actresses like Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly (in Little Children) and Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench (in Notes On A Scandal) - all giving fine performances - isn't so tough.

I just watched The Hudsucker Proxy for the first time. I had mixed feelings on it; I like the pastiche of eras and styles, but it ultimately felt fairly artificial and soulless.. I usually enjoy Cohen Brothers movies too... (And Sam Raimi, as well.)

Then again, I just watched His Girl Friday for the first time a few week earlier, so I might be judging it unfairly. Coming up next, the original version of The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Just watched The Bourne,,.....Uhhmmm,.....The Bourne,.....[huh] You know, that last one.
Anyway, it was pretty good for an action type movie. Better than some I've seen.
Also saw The Simpsons, not bad. :)
