Jacket alteration question

Greetings all,

I have just inherited 2 suits, never worn. The trousers fit me fine, but the jackets are about a size or two too large. The sleeves are fine, and even the length is OK - but they are too large in the chest/stomach area. They were made for someone that was slightly more "barrell-chested" than me.

Do you think that this discrepancy in size can be altered by a tailor? I really don't know what this would entail...

Agree with Mr. H- for sure- any Tailor worth his salt should be able to.
If there's enough fabric, which you have, he can make it smaller.
Depends how it's constructed- as to how he does it. More modern suits have the front darts to take strategic advantage of- side and back seems and the front opening- all places to lose cloth and re-shape. I have a friend in London who's a fashion designer and a nifty sew-ist, he buys old suits with nice cloth and heavily alters them with nice results- last one I saw was a typical '70s suit with typical styling but from Saville Row and nice cloth- ended up being a more classic vintage style.

A tailor who knows how to make suits should be able to reduce the chest and belly of the suit. Regular alterations tailors usually don't have a clue.

I got home with my $1.00 thrift store Hugo boss peak lapel DB and while trying it on in the mirror,my wife reached behind me with both hands holding an inch of the collar and rear seam in her hand..She said "The seamstress can take an inch from the collar to the waist at the seam, whch will pull the front up and back.Thats how you'll look after the alterations".

I was stunned.The jacket literally "jumped" into place and tightened upward and into me to show a beautiful custom fit..With the shoulder pads and tapered underarms the jacket now had a great 40's "V" shape instead of the modern baggy fit.seamstress charges $20.00 for that alteration.Is that a reasonable amount? It seems like a lot of work for that small money.she gets $12.00 to cuff a pair of pants.
