I was thinking of buying an Akubra Fedora. I notice at Everything Australia http://www.everythingaustralian.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=534&ccode=1580&cat_id=2 there's a three month wait. I am thinking of the burnt oak color but I think I might like a black ribbon instead of the brown one it comes with. Because the store will be ordering the hat from Akubra would they be open to that modification?

Snap brim. The felt is extremely soft and pliable and moldable. Of all of the current production hats I have, this one is by far my favorite one. Mine is in the Burnt Oak.

Yes, mine from Hatsdirect was very soft right out of the box. Even after a few months of wear, my Federation Deluxe is stiff as new cardboard compared to the Fedora. If it had a slightly wider brim, I would probably never take it off!!!

I've been thinking about getting an Akubra Fedora, myself. Does anyone know the dimensions of the hat, i.e.,

Brim: length
Crown: length of the front, length of the back

The brim is about 2.5". I'm not at home now, so I can't measure the other dimensions, but the crown is fairly short, especially when compared with the Federation. The Fedora is a much smaller hat than the Federation in most respects, but it's certainly not a stingy brim. The felt is quite pliable, and you can shape the brim and crown into dozens of styles. The low crown height does limit the crown shapes somewhat, though, since your head may push the dent up.

Hats Direct is an excellent seller. I've bought hats from them in person at their shop in Katoomba, and bought online from the U.S. Shipping is remarkably fast, and relatively affordable, thanks to the Aussie dollar being even weaker than the U.S. dollar.

I don't know if you could get the ribbon swapped, but it's worth asking. If you can't, it might make a good project.

I've got one in Charcoal. It's a great hat, really soft. Comes open crowned so you can shape it your self. I got mine from Hatsdirect.com. Had to send the first one back as it was too small, but they were really cool about it and I got my new hat in about 3 weeks. Haven't worn it much lately, I like my Campdraft a lot more. Once I get out my grey winter coat however, it will be my primary hat. You can see my original thread about it here.

I don't own a Akubra fedora, but one thing I really like about its spec is that it comes with a lapel cord (/wind trolly) fitted. I'm not sure how many other hats do that - it's the only one in the Akubra range that Hats direct seem to list as so. I think they should be present on all brimmed hats - it sure ain't dignified running down the road after a hat that has blown off!

I have two Borsalinos that have that feature. There was a weather front blowing through downtown Seattle a couple of days ago, and I was very happy that I had engaged that feature!

Living in Cheyenne where the wind starts blowing in October and doesn't leave off till June, that's a very strong selling point! I believe I just might have to get me one of those (I wonder if I could get them to put one on a Federation for me).

I have an Akubra Fedora, "Sydney", and the brim is 2 3/8" and the back of the crown is 4 1/4" high and the front tip of the crown is 4 1/2" Actually, because the back of the crown slants inward, it actually could look or measure 4". Either way, for the price, it's a very nice hat. You'll be happy with that purchase.

If you haven't ordered yet...

...be careful. Hats direct is excellent, but you have to be dead certain before you order on color, size, and style. Shipping is expensive and returns are a further expense. It doesn't take much for the cost of the shipping to exceed the cost of the hat.

The Biltmore I bought recently has one too - I'm very pleased with that. Not had occasion to use it yet, but I'm glad it's there as not so many monthsw ago there was noe day I had to remove and carry the hat I was wearing most of the day as it was so damn windy I just couldn't keep it on. Hate that. I guess that sort of thing not being standard is a symptom of hats for the most part these days being sold for style rather than practicality.

Good idea. When I come to order my Feds, I plan to ask HatsDirect if it's possible to have those fitted as an extra. Hell, even if i could find somewhere in London I could have it done it'd be worth it. I don't want to end up having to wear a flat cap with a suit in the winter simply because the wind makes a Fedora impossible!

I just got a "Sydney" from David Morgan. It's a really fine hat too for $116(very soft and lightweight) and I love the red silk liner. I ordered on Monday and it was sitting on my porch Wednesday
