The thing is...that the globe was probably not used by Hitler. He may have never even laid eyes upon it. He reportedly did not fancy the Kehlsteinhaus for various reasons (afraid of the elevator getting struck by lightning, it was too cold, etc.; I think he made 6 or 7 short visits during his life.) Eva Braun used it fairly often in the summer, but I don't recall her being much of a world dominator. Now, if it had been a globe in the Berghof, just down the road, world domination marks would probably be all over it. All kinds of Third Reich planning went on there. The article seem to suggest that it was housed in the "retreat".

I seem to recall stories of the Berghof being looted and vandalized like crazy, right away, with no armed guards or anything. The home was later used a sort of private officer's club after the war. But then the U.S. Army arranged to have it razed (to the concrete foundation; I saw it...it is totally flat!)

That said, it is quite an astounding piece of Nazi memorabilia, of course. Wow!

Several years ago I saw a TV snippet about the Americans who made it to the Furherbunker in Berlin long after the Russians had looted everything not bolted down. All that was left semi-intact was a toilet so one guy unattched the seat which graced his sailboat head for years. Don't know what happened to it.

The auctioneers have an estimate of $15,000 - $20,000 for it, but personally I think it will sell for a lot more. There's been news stories all over the world about this and that should see bidders coming out of the woodwork for it.

Either Christies or Sothebys sold a painting a few years back and it went for a ridiculous price considering it was a fairly ho-hum effort.

A friend of mine who is a historian back home in NZ has an authorisation for the promotion of an SS-General on Hitler's personal stationary and signed by him and Himmler. And it is worth a huge amount. Strangely enough and as a little trivia, Himmler signed most things in green pencil!

Autographs seem to lead a life of their own and command tidy sums. The luminaries of the war like Rommel, Montgomery, Patton and such are on a higher plain than other personalities such as famed fighter pilots or Naval luminaries from any country.

I have been around all the top American, RAF and Luftwaffe aces many many times and was never into the autograph scene. It IS amazing that some one like Adolf Galland's signature could be worth $1-2000 these days.

Agreed. I wish they were more specific about where it was recovered.

I thought I read an articel that clearly said it was recovered from the Berghof, although the sloppy author then referred to the Berghof as the Eagles Nest.

My wife and I stayed at Hotel zum Turken. Talk about a very, very strange trip.

From that article, although it is not very clear, I think I can read that is was taken from the Berghof, not the Kehlsteinhaus. Why? The article talks about damage to the globe stemming from bombs or the like. Well, Kehlsteinhaus was never bombed, set ablaze or vandalized. The Berghof, however, was a ruin by the time the Allies took over.

So I guess that globe is from the Berghof and Hitler did use it extensively.

Just my two cents...

And technically Twitch he was very amateurish in his painting.

When I did my degree in art history I had a lecturer who used Hitler's paintings as the perfect example of personality setting financial worth and historical value rather than excellence in the formal and/or conceptual aspects of a work.

People want them because they have that man's scratchy signature on them!

Spit there was a movie I caught on satellite recently that used that theme. In that a Jewish art dealer was about to have a show for the drawings he did of his visions of Berlin's future buildings and the movement's uniforms and insignia. This was new and fresh stuff compared to his old bla-bla work.

Anyhow Hitler made a speech and it so incensed some sailors they beat the art dealer to death by chance. Hitler was on the brink of quitting public speaking since the dealer assured him his "new stuff' would sell.[huh]

I can't recall the name of the movie, sorry.

100000$ for a globe that Hitler had in one of his houses? :rage: As I am from Germany, 27 years of age, more on the left-wing side of things and had to 'deal' with Neo-Nazis and other kinds of fascists on more than one occasion, I just can't understand why anyone would pay that lot of money for such a s***bag's possesion...[huh]
Just my two cents, but why don't those people spend their money on useful things? Don't get me wrong on this, I understand a certain sense of nostalgia, but this is going wrong...:eusa_doh:
