Getting a suit tailor-made

DUDE, THAT'S THE GUY! Good job friend! I'll tell you, he has made vintage looking clothes for lots of guys up there. So, I would have to say he's the tops! But, bring you own fabric since his fabrics aren't as good as some. Great tailor though!

Yes, the back of the collar dosen't sit right. I believe it might have somthing to do with the light weight fabric. It sits a little high and needs to be fixed. But, the guy did copy pictures I drew and he did a great job. Got the fit and look just right! The arm holes are perfect!

I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but my plans have hit a snag. It turned out that my father, the one who had offered to buy me a bespoke suit, despite having lived in Vancouver for many years, had no idea that tailors charged as much as they did on this side of the Pacific. Consequently, I'll have to settle for an off-the-rack suit for now. :cry:

(It's a two-button plain-black wool-gabardine suit. The four most apparent flaws are the oversized armholes, the barely existent waist, and the somewhat narrow lapels of the jacket and the rise of the trousers, which barely reach my waistline. [Earlier, I had tried on a pair of trousers that had such a low rise that it felt like wearing plastic wrap, even though it was sitting on my hip, so this was an improvement!] Together with my black necktie, black suspenders, black socks, and, in the future, a black fedora, people are probably going to compare me to a government agent or something. I'm a comparatively boring dresser, as you can tell, but I like it this way.)

Again, I am dreadfully sorry for getting all of you excited for nothing. I apologize profusely. I feel like such an idiot.Thank you all for your good advice. In the meantime, I'm going to save up money to buy myself a bespoke suit. (I have collected about 500.00 CAD so far.) I'll get back to you all then.

Don’t worry about it friend! I’m sure we all feel your disappointment with you. Buck up buddy, you’ll get one eventually! No worries. In the mean time, start looking on ebay and you might find a vintage one on there and for a fraction of the price of a new one! It might even fit you better then a modern tailor made suit as well! You never know.

A family member used them several years ago for a bespoke suit, and was extremely impressed - exceptionally good work, and suprisingly about the same cost as a mid quality off-the-rack suit. The location is actually a showroom with fabric and examples of various styles; they take measurements and pictures, and send the info off to Hong Kong where the suit is made - you then go back for fittings/rework until you are happy.

Travelling to Seattle may be a stretch for you, but I vaguely recall that the owner did a circuit of various Pacific NW cities - so its possible that this may work for you or the owner may know of a referral in the Vancouver area. In any case, it might be worth a call or email.

Do you know any actual tailors in Hong KOng that are good? I live in Taipei, Taiwan, and am going to visit Hong Kong over Christmas break, and I can consider getting a suit made.

I've heard of a place called Sam's Tailor (which is run by a man who is not named Sam ). CNN ran a story about this place back in 1997. It's an old article, but it's all I have at this time. I hope this is of some help.

I am liking them more and more.

I am currently testing the waters with www.mycustomtailor.com I first ordered a shirt. Now I am ordering a blazer. Next a pair of pants...all to have the sizes and measurements so I can get a suit.

If you don't have the financial resources to take this approach, I would still suggest the site as the offer great ideas on fabric, measurements, styles, etc.

Don't be ashamed or worried about getting anything like what Bogart wore in the movie

In a recent interview with Lauren (bogies old wife) on Tunner Classic Movies, she mentioned that back in the day movie studies went all out on clothing, many movies still do. I know you can't place your bets on everything in the old big budget movies, but if you see it in movies like The Maltese Falcon, than you can bet that not only is the suite or other gear darn good to look at for ideas, but some of the best made wear of the day. So, modeling a suite after one that Bogie or other top billing actors wore is hardly ever a bad start.

The best tailors in the world used to be in Hollywood. Forget London or Italy or Hong Kong, back then the best of those countries came to work for the movies.

I'll drink to that. Hollywood was the hub of fashion in the 20's to the 50's.
