Unfortunate Experience With Lost Worlds

Despite negative feedback regarding customer experiences with Lost Worlds, I gave the guy the benefit of not having done business with him myself and contacted him about my interest in a jacket. I regret having done so. Not knowing my size, he offered to send me a sample jacket to try on, although because I'm generally a long size and the jacket he sent me was a regular, we both knew there could be a possibility the jacket would not fit properly, in which case we'd know that a long length would be more appropriate. In fact, the jacket was too short. Additionally, I noticed that because the sleeve is close-fitting, made of horsehide, and is lacking an inside fabric sleeve, the leather was digging into my wrist, making the sleeves uncomfortable. I gave him this feedback in a very polite manner. I returned the jacket, paying the nearly $30 shipping/insurance charge. I emailed the guy about interest in another jacket they offer because the sleeves looked a bit wider on their website, however I never received a response. I guess the guy likes easy sales and does not wish to speak with me further. No problema, I later purchased a jacket from Aero that is nicer and better constructed. Now I learn that I'm being charged a $10 re-stocking fee because I did not include a "RAN" code with the jacket I returned and that he charged me $22.50 for shipping the jacket to me. These charges, in my opinion, are absurd since he knew I was not buying the jacket, just getting it temporarily for sizing purposes, since they do not personally see customers. Of course, he also charged me for the jacket, itself, which, presumably will be credited to my cc. I think charging me a re-stocking fee and shipping charges for the original shipping to me, under the circumstances, is very sleazy and unprofessional. Together with his unresponsiveness, I would never recommend doing business with Lost Worlds.

A-ha! So whoever told me (or maybe it was me got it backwards. I do have an oldy!

The eBay guy told me he'd only worn it twice but couldn't remember when he got it.

Hi Fletch, we must be twins, as our dimensions are identical (5' 10"/185lbs/35" arms).

Do you also own any Aero jackets? I ask since we are the same measurement, I was wondering what size had fit you from them to use as a guide.

Bob: I own one Aero A-2, the budget model Indian-made goatskin "11018" in size 44.

It's very comfortable over all. I find the waist a bit short and the shoulders a little wide, but these things are part of Aero's typical cut.

BUMP! The LW Dubow reviewed here is still for sale!
PM me if you're interested in this fine jacket...

My plan is to tell them to cut the Rallye to a more narrow shape, since they make it all by hand, in their Scotland factory, was my understanding.

What do you mean by "budget-model"? I was informed all of their coats are made in their factory in Galashiels.

AIUI, Aero several years ago got a line on some very nice Indian goatskins and had a subcontractor in India build the jackets, with linings, knits etc. sent over from Scotland. I think they went for about GBP300 new. For awhile they were selling off the remainder on their website at ±GBP 200. The goat is really quite handsome, plenty of grain, with the undercolor just starting to show thru.

At the risk of speaking out of turn, especially in a specialized area (men's leather jackets) of which my knowledge could be placed on a pinhead, I was told by several sources that product from India (and especially China) is not good quality, and to be avoided.

The only companies I have been willing to consider are Aero and Lost Worlds, because they manufacture everything in house.

You are quite correct about avoiding jackets made in China or India. This jacket (goatskin) was a special deal Aero had with a subcontractor in India. Their signature (i.e., more expensive jackets) jackets are made in house. As is the LW jackets

If in house construction is important, you could also add Goodwear to your list.

Hi Jake. It would seem that the premier labels (Aero, Lost Worlds, etc.) create their signature products in-house. I am not seeking a military-type repro, as I am leaning towards the longer coat styles (car coat, ie.).

My only experience with one of those indian goatskins was last year. I picked up a brand new example on ebay for a buy it now price of 100 bucks. FAR too small for me, but within a week I had turned it around and sold it for 400. In my opinion it was a finely constructed jacket, I would certainly wear one if I picked one up in my size.

Lost Worlds Leather Jackets

Hi Gang,

I have an old Schott A-2 and want a more 1930s appropriate civilian jacket for riding the old bike. Somthing without elastic cuffs or waistband. Basically an Indy-esque jacket.

Anyway I was looking at two companies that made jackets that fit the bill: US Wings and Lost Worlds Inc. While searching the forum, I found a pretty bad general impression of US Wings (namely JohnnyJohnny's post and various replies). But I couldn't find anything for Lost Worlds.

I'm torn between the "Roadhouse" and "Suburban" in russett.

http://www.lostworldsinc.com/Roadhouse-Horsehide-Leather-Motorcycle-Jacket.htm

http://www.lostworldsinc.com/Motorcycle_Jackets_Leather_Horsehide_Jacket_SBB.htm

Could anyone share their opinions of Lost Worlds ?? I don't mind paying $600-800 for a true quality leather jacket but certainly don't want to be let-down. Any advice, input, etc is appreciated.

Clint

get your motor running, get ouT on the highway...

hi, yes, i did post a few things about uswings...one of the responses suggested i had said enough, and so i kind of agree with that...

i will say this though, i did buy one of their non-milspec jackets and it was truLy generic city...enough said

sounds like you are jumping a few categories in quality, like to the top...

of the two you showed, i'd definitely say the suburban looks great, like something i ordered from aero (waiting to receive it)...the highwayman for $800 in horse leather...the roadhouse, to me anyway, looks a bit off with those biG strange patch pockets that don't look like they belong...but just an opinion

i can say that in my dealings with aero's u.s. rep, mark moyes (i may have misspelled his last name), i have never had such thorough or gracious service on any product in my life...i think aero motorcycle jackets are great from the pics and response here, but the customer service and help from mark are the top of the line if that makes a difference to you

again, just a personal taste point, i prefer the 'luftwaffe' style motorcycle jackets like lost world's suburban, or aero's highwayman, rather than the old brando style, which every cut rate seller has a pakistani version of...and they have become kind of a cliche (hope i don't get nasty letters over that comment)

by the way, i have two motorcycle jackets that i purchased that are in great shape, but a size too large for me...they need someone with a 46 to 48" chest, i have a 45" chest...they are a vanson mercury and a schott classic, pic below:
http://www.schottnyc.com/shared/showfullimage.cfm?imagename=135blkfrt.jpg

the vanson looks like that a bit...both are in excellent shape, the vanson A-, the schott B+++, if you're interested

best of luck with your jacket whatever you get!

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. And thanks to whichever moderator found these olds posts regarding LW and connected my post !:eusa_doh:

I think I'll go with Aero. Price not too much different between the two, but Aero's got a rock-solid reputation so that tips to balance. The couple models of the Highwayman you suggested are just perfect for the generic 1930-early 40s I'm going for. Not sure which one yet, but definately in brown/russet.

Oh and thanks for the offer of the jackets but I'm in the market for a 42".
Thanks again,
Clint

Best advice, buy Aero, its really that simple. Best people to work with - super patient and easygoing no matter how stupid you think your question is, and I had many - and their products are built to last not your lifetime, but through generations...

On the way !

Guys,

Thanks much for the input. I feel like I've just been steered clear of a possibly frustrating purchase. :eusa_clap

So I've just now placed an order for the Aero Highwayman in brown horsehide. No idea the delivery time, but I'll try to remember to post images when it arrives (if anyone cares that is.).

Thanks all,
Clint
