The Day the Earth Stood Still is being remade. It's even being filmed in my neck of the woods, just over the border in Vancouver, BC. But why, oh why, did they cast Keanu Reeves as Klaatu? I surely hope he can pull it off, but I think they could have done better.

What does it say about me that my first reaction on reading the title of this thread was "Excellent!" accompanied by the guitar gesture..?

Klaatu drives a Mirada? Does it have that rich Corinthian leather?

My hearing isn't the best. Mirada, mirata, verata, whatever, they sound the same to me.

My biggest fear is it will have a "pc" twist to it and end with Klaatu giving us a lecture about global warming and being overweight.

This is one of my favorite stories. I hear Will Smith's son is also in this movie. It will be interesting to see if he's any good.

That must be Jaden Smith. IMDB lists him as being "rumored" to have a part.

Tomasso...

:eek:fftopic:

I'm just not sure how a photo of a man vomiting relates in any way to this thread, but I do know it's uncouth, impolite and out of place in this forum. I know that I couldn't get away with it and I would hope that a bartender would remove it promptly.

Posting a picture of someone vomiting isn't anymore gentlemanly than that of the public vomiter - you needn't share it with the gentleman (and women!) here. Thank you very much!

Seriously,
Dixon Cannon

It is noted on the photo that it is Keanu Reeves throwing up, and therefore in a funny, albeit a tad gross way, it does relate to the post - I took it along the lines of "Here's Keanu's reaction to his own performance in the upcoming movie..."

Remakes in general just suck.
I don't understand the point of remaking a classic film. Is it just to try and relate the story to a younger audience? Why not just re-release the original to the theaters? Here are some shining examples:
"the Thomas Crown affair" How can you hope to make a newer version ? it sucked
"the getaway" boy, that one REALLY sucked.
"The Italian Job" Another mistake, it sucked.
And who could forget "Oceans's eleven" I even like all the actors in that re-pop but c'mon, re-create the Rat Pack? Who's brilliant idea was that??
I could go on and on with bad examples of remade films but, you get my point.

Surely that would be in-keeping with the spirit of the original - wasn't Klaatu's very purpose to make the human race see the error of its ways and shed the violence that has characterised its entire history? Probably quite subversive at the time, bearing in mind this was firmly in Cold War days.

I don't like the idea of a remake... I'm not opposed to all remakes per se, but it seems all too often a fruitless exercise, and generally I would find something original of greater interest. [huh]

I'm really annoyed at hearing this news. TDTESS is a classic of 1950s science fiction. Leave the movie alone. It doesn't need any blasted re-make.

nerd?

Does anyone else remember when the Return of the Jedi action figures came out in about '83 - that three of the un-named "skiff guard" characters from the movie were called Klaatu, Barada, and Nikto in their action figure incarnation? Perhaps any of these action figures could stand in place of Reeves. they'd prolly convey as much emotion...[huh]
