How do you store your hats?

Hat boxes & Hat storage.

I have tried to find cardboard hat boxes, like the ones you get your hats shipped in. I can find the box, but I can't find the insert with the hole cut out where the hat fits into. Anyone got any info on where I can buy some of those boxes for storing my hats?

Also, if you have any other ideas on how you store your hats, I'd love to hear them. I had about 16 of my hats lining the staircase leading from my front door up to my apartment, which looked cool, but I'm afraid that the sunlight coming in the windows in the morning may be starting to fade some of them. I'd like to find some clear drawers or inexpensive hat boxes to stack them in the closet.

How do you guys and gals store your large collections? I have over 20 hats now and they're starting to take over every spare door knob in the place. Help!

Well, Yesterday I found hatboxes that match my bedroom

at Burlington Coat Factory Outlet. My BR is lavender and grey and pale green. And a couple of "stacks" will make a nice accent decoration. I cut the insert of the box from Hat Direct and reused the packing cones, etc. So for longer term storage, it will be protected inside a "pretty decorative" box. I noticed some masculine looking boxes at Burlington Coat Factory Outlet too.

Regarding hat boxes and inserts; I generally buy vintage hat boxes wherever I can find them... local flea markets, ebay, antique shops. More often than not the insert is missing so I just make my own using archival mat board I get from a local art supply outfit. Regarding the storage issue...vintage hat boxes tend to be pretty cool looking so the wife tolerates a few of them stacked around in a decorative way. When I upgraded to a wide screen TV I was left with a nice TV cabinet that looks like a wardrobe...just perfect for stacking my hat boxes in and on. No room in my closets. My lovely bride and I have a bit of the clothes horse in us. Well me mostly but I'm rubbing off on her.

I had bought some clothes hampers a few years back that had canvas liners/bags in them (apparently you were to just take the bag out when you went to do your laundry), but I put my hats in the bags as the ones I had at the time were too big for boxes. Keeps the dust off pretty well, but doesn't offer any knocks and bumps protection.

Boxes

I kept a bunch of my hats out last year and I had a devil of a time getting all the dust off them. So this year I am keeping them in boxes (marked so I know what is in them). I don't get the dust and I like the way it stores the brim in an up position.

How Do You Display/Store Your Hat Colletcion?

I am a newbie at hat collecting/wearing, but in 2.5 months I have accumulated about 18 hats. I was wondering how you display and/or store your hats. I have hat boxes for many of them, but some of them are so nice, I'd like to keep them on display. I am a carpeneter/cabinet maker in my "other" life, so I was considering building a display case with shelves and glass doors, but before I jumped into that I figured I see what the norm is. Any ideas are appreciated.

If you have the means and space to display a collection proudly, I don't see why you shouldn't. Be sure to use or make a stand that will hold each hat without causing any harm to the hat shape. Oh, and use some cedar in your design to protect the hats.

I can only dream of such a display. The safest place in my home for my hats in their boxes on a shelf. So, good luck with your project.

Thanks for the related thread and for the advice on cedar material for a display case. I have about 20 small table top hatracks I purchased from Noggintops to keep the hats elevated.

Hat racks keep em handy

I use these hat racks to keep the ones handy that I'm currently wearing the most. Some are stored in their boxes others are here and there. If you're not careful one may sneak up on you when you expect it least.

Cheap Substitution for a hat stand

Here's a tip. I recently found that 100 CD containers make a great hat stand. Here is a 50 disc, they're a bit too short but the 100 is perfect!

Store: some in hatboxes, some in tippy stacks on the tops of things like coatracks and wardrobes.

Display: strictly one at a time. On head, on CD rack, on bass saxophone, etc.

Thanks but that's not an Art Fawcett, I wish it was. Believe it or not it used to be an Amish mans hat. I trimmed down the brim, bashed it like a fedora and added ribbon and wind trolley to it. I think it came out nicely. It does have a pretty tall crown though. I think I have about $15.00 invested in it.
