Either late in our time in high school, or perhaps during a vacation during our early years of college, I was at a local mall with several friends and wearing, as has been my habit since December of 2001, a black fedora. Apparently at some point someone nearby was overhead to say something to the effect that I wanted to look like a rapper. Fewer things could be further from the truth.

the only rap group i can think of that where those hats is Run-DMC:

and they were throughout the 80s...[huh]

One of the reasons that I started wearing hats, is I finally realized that I wasn't (likely) going to get beat up for it. I was 28 years old, I wasn't going to fear reprisal for wearing what I wanted to anymore. It sickens me that government schools do that to people. That for 28 years of my life, I lived with a fear that if I didn't conform, I would be assaulted. What a world. That's why I think Dinnerman is one of the bravest people I know (or internet know anyway). To dress as well as he does, in High School no less, takes sand, more sand then I had or have.

AMEN to that! :eusa_clap

Of course, my decision was made for me anyway (as we weren't allowed to wear hats) ... and it's just as well. Mine would have been stolen by some ne'er-do-well who was larger than I was, because that's just what my schools were like.

Definitely one of the sadder conflicts in society. During my earlier high-school days a guy tried to start a fight with me because he said I looked like a lawyer. I remember exactly what I was wearing that day - a black mechanics jacket with paint stains on it, a shrunken t-shirt, a pair of field pants with holes in them, and my beat-up black oxfords. My hair was parted like always.
He said that it wasn't normal that I dressed so nice everyday. I proceeded to show him the holes in all of my clothing.
A few moments more of immature comments and my comebacks, he reveals to me that he is "drunk as hell". I'm not exactly sure what he thought this revelation would accomplish, but I said something back along the lines of, "I can quite clearly see that". At this, he threatens to kill me and gets out of his chair. I also stood up because quite franky, I don't want to be sitting down when someone attacks me. At this point the student behind me, who knew me previously, said "I wouldn't do that, dude. This is one of those kids that you don't think anything of at first, then he'll kick your ass once you try t start something with him." I guess that must have done something because the guy didn't bother me anymore for the remainder of the year, although he shouted "Hey lawyer" across the room once upoon my enterance.

Must have been the hair [huh]
It's funny that since I started dressing this way, people have been less privy to start fights with me or raise any commotion whatsoever. Actually I seem to be treated nicer in general. Maybe I made the mistake of dressing casually when this one guy (SUPPOSEDLY a cage fighter) wanted to start a fight with me. Something about coming on to his girlfriend when I was acquainted with her a year ago and asked if she wanted to hang out with me. Whatever. I had no time to "dance" with him (I kid you not, he actually said that) outside and it's frankly her loss if she wants to keep dating this Neanderthal.

It's not government schools, it's children and the way they
treat each other. I went to public school and I see if anything
more conformity and pressure in my partner's daughter's private
middle school.

I was thinking this recently myself. My hat is off to Dinerman
(and his parents).

One of my first public outings after shaving my head fully for the first time was in Manchester. Some local, mutant underclass children decided to shout things at the group I was with (after ascertaining that we were out of spitting range). I - clad in brothel creepers, drainpipes, leopard print shirt and leather mc was asked:

"Oi, mister - are you a gay?"

Naturally, I responded with a withering "Is that the best you can do? Are you a gay? What's education coming to in this country if all you can think of is to question someone's sexuality for kicks?"

Pregnant pause.

"Oi mister, are you a Nazi?"

lol

;) If anyone asks where i got such a stupid hat, I usually shrug nonchalently and tell 'em the last guy who took the mickey was wearing it.

A little off topic here.
I wear a hat every day. To work, lately it's been a Filson tin cloth (tan) or shelter cloth (green) packer hat, nothing special. When I see some one wearing a fedora type hat, it's usualy nicer than mine. If they're in ear-shot and they have not seen me, I'll shout "nice hat!"(I didn't start doing this for any other reason other than starting friendly conversation.) I always get one of two reactions; If he's a big guy he'll turn to me like he's ready to brain some one. Or if it's somebody of moderate proportions, the look after the turn is one of "here we go again, what's this jerk look like?" After the initial looks that could kill and I'm seen wearing my own hat, there follows an expression of "Good, I don't have to knock any teeth out of this guys head, or I don't have to walk away wishing I could." Then my sincere compliment is always returned with a compliment about mine. (Even though their's is better)

The hats I see men/boys wear today; trucker or ball caps with ironed flat brims, worn sideways,,, and someone in a fedora should be made feel like they need to defend wearing it....pity

Good for all of you for handling these confrontations like gentlemen,,,, :eusa_clap and sometimes, if the situation calls for.......:D

When I saw that the most recent person to post in this thread was Big Man, I thought 'Who the heck would be stupid enough to make a derogatory comment to Big Man?' lol

Of course the desire, and force, to conform is strongest when your a teenager, regardless of what kind of school it is. I think government schools are worse then most, but that's kind o.t. I agree that it can, and does, happen everywhere.

It's a touch windy and cold here. Tomorrow might be a cap day!

There's a guy at work who's constantly making comments ranging from calling me Dick Tracy to asking me where my shoe phone is. :eusa_doh: It'd be one thing if it were some idiot on the street (ignore 'em), or I'd just started dressing up a week or so or something like that, but I work across a desk from the guy, and I've been doing this for nearly two years now. Doesn't help that I've started gelling my hair back the past two weeks; now I'm "Mr. Smooth" and "Mr. Slick." Hello, I have a name... it's Christopher. Chris-to-pher. Practice it a while. If you need me, I'll be at my desk, working.

A bit snarky, I know, but it gets so old after a while. [Un]fortunately, I lack the cajones to actually say anything about it, so my thoughts remain that: thoughts.

There's always the "If I am Dick Tracy then you must be PruneFace comeback." Then again, this guy needs Dick Tracy to throw him in the pen with Bruno---if you know what I mean. ;)
The other comment I can't post here. ;)
