At the moment I am working on this one, it started out as something for me but it turned out to be ideal as one of my college projects too. I'm doing the slimmer one with the sash belt and am doing it in Marilyn pink lol

And they look better on you than they do on me. I HACKED the heck out of what I had. I took 3" off the top of the waist then reattached the waistband. That left only 2 instead of 4 buttons on either side. Took them in another 2" and in the end...From the front I thought I was making progress...from the rear...they sag sooo bad and need to come in another FEW inches. I don't even know if I can take them in as much as they need to. The darts are going to be within an inch of the center seam.lol

I should take pics just for comedy value.

Let's hear it for muslin mock-ups (However, I will say my fabric was only $3/yd though)

Can we do a "Show Us What You Want to Make"? :) I have this pattern (first picture), but I don't have enough material (green with white polka dots) to do it all (I am on a spending freeze as I'm saving money for the sekrit vacation) . I have some white though, and thought of making it like the second picture, but maybe it would look better like the third one:

My daughters like the green neck one, I think I lean toward the white. :?

Josephine I made that dress a couple of years ago, and toyed around with the idea of doing exactly what you've posted!! I thought it might make the dress look like a pinafore over the top :D I prefer the green neckline rather than the white, as it blends better. '

Actually what you could do to help the colours mix is put some white ribbon around the hem. I can envisage two rows of narrow ribbon, maybe an inch above the bottom, with a small space between them. You could either use ribbon, or you could use bias binding, if your fabric is cotton. You just need to make sure the colours are co-ordinated :D

I have photos of my dress here if you want to see how it looks made up. I found that I looked AWFUL without the ribbon belt, but I think that has more to do with the excess of white on a pale person :p I also didn't have time to put the sleeves on, and then liked how it looked without the sleeves. My only other issue is that it has a habit of falling off my shoulders, but that's more of a fitting issue!

Oh and I should also mention that it really looks best with a petticoat (Crinoline in the US I think?) underneath. Without my petticoat on it just looks flat and icky!

I vote for the green neck. Very pretty idea! I have this pattern too, but I've got dozens of other projects planned out first (don't we all?).

Thanks, all, I do appreciate the thoughts on the dress.

That's what I think about the green neck too, that it makes it look a little like I have a white apron on over a green dress. I also thought the white neck might elongate the look of the dress, with an uninterrupted column of white.

Last_Chael, thanks for the picture link. I remember that dress, I didn't realize it was the same one. :)

So here is my very first attempt at sewing. Sorry the photo is so blurry and will not rotate. Argh. Yellow polka dot dress, modern Betsy Ross "girly dress" pattern based on 40s styling (sort-of). I attempted to make it bigger based on the stated dimensions and it turned out enormous. So I took in the side seams only to make it less bag-like. I will attempt to take in the darts I think though too. Or I will just re-make it next time according to pattern and write this one off as a summer muumuu.

That looks great The Shirt!

I found a lot of modern patterns too big as well. I often take a rough measurement of the pattern pieces before I get down to business, to see if Im picking the right size for me, not just what the pattern says.

But thats fantastic for a near first try. Wow, something you can wear! My first trys made me cry.

Thanks LD and DPD

I just want to know what size 12 girl has a 25" waist. That's not a size 12 to me. :) It's really hard to figure out what size is going to work. I'm figuring its going to be hit or miss for a while. But it's super fun and so rewarding to spend a day on something and be able to wear it the next.

Shirt,

Nice work on the dress. You're right it is very rewarding when you have the finished product and can say "Look what I did!". As for the sizing...I still haven't figured it out. I always end up taking things in because I purchased what should have been my size and I am swimming in it. I am learning to downsize regardless of what the measurements on the enevelope says.

It sounds like your sz12 is a vintage 12 with the 25" waist.

The Shirt, that looks fabulous! Especially for your first project. You don't even want to SEE my first. Neither do I, for that matter... hehehe.

A few new dresses! The last two still need hems but are done other than that :D
