Spring and Summer Hats??

I just started wearing hats in the winter and love them. I am looking forward to spring and summer, but I am not that big a fan of straws (although I have seen some attractive models. What do you wear for summer activities (e.g. working in the yard, heading to an outdoor concert, fishing/other outdoor sports, or just going to the store) if you want to avoid straw hats? Any ideas?

Sorry Deanstuff

[huh]

You're in Maryland and it does get hot there in the Summer. When working, or playing, outside you will need a straw of some type, so pick out a good one.

If you wear a fur felt:

1) You will sweat right through the hat ruining the ribbon.

2) Shortly after #1 you will die of a heatstroke as most of the human body's excess heat is vented through the top of the head and you've blocked the exhaust port.

Seriously, I wear fur felts all year long, since we have Air Conditioning.
I just don't wear them outside, in the summer, if I plan to be there very long.

;)

What is it about straw hats that makes you not a fan?

I bet if you found a block you liked and gave a try, you'd find that you really enjoy wearing it.

He said he just started wearing hats. I give him until the end of the summer and I'll bet money he owns a nice milan or 2. :D

My first and only hat for years was a Akubra Federation. Never sweat threw the hat, never got heatstroke. Besides if you are concerned with venting look at the Akubra models with eyelets in the sides of the crown. http://www.everythingaustralian.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=8&ccode=1080&cat_id=2 is my new summer hat.

But Johnny.. Does it ever get hot in Canada. Here in the center of the Eastern US coast there are days where you could almost fry an egg on the sidewalk.
I bet you would sweat through the Fed down here on the 4th of July.

lol lol lol

Uh huh... my first first to Calgary, a certain June 3rd to be exact, I was strolling through downtown... enjoying the SNOW FLURRIES!!!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE AB.! But often here in E. Tennessee we'll have one of those lovely bright, clear & dry autumn days, highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s & my wife will say "Oh this is just like a perfect Calgary summers' day"
lol

Alberta has mountains, forests, prairies and deserts. This last month we have seen temperatures as low as -40C = -49F but last summer we got heat waves up to +40C = 104F and thats in Edmonton. In the Drumheller Badlands it was probably hotter. But then again it is a dry heat up here so it may not be as bad as by the coast.

I'm also not a fan of straw. For one thing, I don't like lighter shades (though they are at least earth tones). But for another, they don't provide any rain protection. That might be fine in the desert, but round here you never know when you're going to get an unexpected thunderstorm.

I like the idea of an all purpose hat that can go anywhere and handle any weather, and looks good. I know that's not realistic, but I'm still in denial. Why do I insist on having one hat that I can wear all year round when I obviously change my other clothes for extreme weather? Well, before I wore fedoras, I wore a suede Aussie hat (with the brim down all around, thank you) year round. It was a great hat for protection from all the elements, and if I had to wipe my brow every now and then, that was okay with me. Eventually I started dressing more conservatively and wanted a more formal hat. So now I think of my fedoras as being all-purpose.

The last two summers I've word my Federation, even on some scorchers. True, I probably would have been more comfortable in a straw, but I was happier in my Fed because I felt like I had a hat that could deal with whatever weather I needed it to.

It might be silly, but then, to some extent any concession made for fashion's sake is silly. Ties are silly. Buttons on cuffs are silly. High heels are silly. But humans are silly, so who cares?

Come to think of it, though, I have been thinking about a lighter felt for summer. Any suggestions? If I had $350 sitting around I'd get an Artlite, but what other options are there?

Would a winter felt such as an Open Road, Federation or Squatter wear any cooler in summer (not cool looking, actually cooler) if the liner was removed?

What is the purpose of the plastic piece at top of liner? is it supposed to keep the hat off my prevoiusly thick hair? Seems to be a moisture trap in summer.

And.. do the vent grommets in a Riverina type actually help or just for show?

Usually I end up not liking the weave. Although, I have seen a number of tighter weave hats that are a little more appealing. I have seen some nice blocks. I'll just have to give them a try and see how they work. Miller has some nice ones I have my eye on. Thanks!!

You are probably right. In December when I started wearing hats I had no thoughts of owning over 20 felts as I do now.

I really like that hat. It reminds me of my Statson Catera Gun Club, just with large vent holes. I don't know if the holes are enough to keep it cool in the east, but it is a fine hat and if it does work for summer, I'd definitly put it in my collection.
