I have just won and paid for this rather nice Roughwear A2 AC 23380 CBI jacket in a 42. It is in near mint condition. It was issued to a pilot in transport command and flown over the "hump" in the CBI theatre. Pilot's nametag and unofficial ATC patch are in mint condition. The lining is in near mint condition apart from near the hanger and has the original blood chit sewn in the back. The left shoulder features the CBI insignia whilst the right shoulder has the Army Air Corps shoulder patch. The back of the jacket has a leather blood chit sewn on. Also with the jacket is a silk map issued by the AAF of Central China and French Indo China and a cloth blood chit. The zipper is a Crown and works perfectly. I will take more pics when it arrives. The seller is on business in the UK so postage should be quick. Now what to sell?

Can't get any nicer than that ! Now 2 questions, is your house up for sale now ? Second question does your wife know !?

Good questions. The answer is no to both! I am currently selling a Poughkeepsie and have some jackets lined up to sell to off-set the cost of this beauty! I think the price was fair and really a little more than double the price for two high end repros.

Saw it Andrew, aside from being too big for me I wonder if authenticity would be suspect? Not sure, keep us updated when you receive it.

Steve, it used to belong to a reputable collector in the States who has assured me it is 95% authentic and as good as described. Byers was first in the CBI and was posted later to the UK, where he was AC of S, A-1 (personnel) to General Wyland. The novelty patch is original but was added to the jacket by this collector as the original one had been removed.

Great find then...I suspected the patch was a replacement. Congrats.

Andrew, I know nothing of the CBI, but this is two things come to mind- if he had a desk job wouldn't it appear a bit pretentious to his unit if he had it patched up with the flag and blood chit if he wasn't actively flying, and, he must have had a second jacket after he was posted to the UK (now that would be pretentious wearing that in an a Staff Office there) where he really could have done with one...and weren't they only issued one? I guess it could have been sent home or gone with him at the end of the CBI period.

It's obvious that the jacket was rarely worn. If the seller is telling the truth which I assume he is then this jacket must have been packed up and sent back. He was most likely wearing his dress uniform anyway and would have had no use for the jacket.

Steve you are spot on here. I believe the jacket was shipped stateside after he finished in the CBI theatre and before he went to the UK.

Andrew, I only just caught up with the thread at VLJ. Now if you'd said it was Simon's- no questions.

Andrew, thanks. This A2 is awesome. I know the patch is not original to the jacket-sewn on by Simon, but its an original novelty patch and is very stylish IMO. I never discuss jacket prices with my wife.

Yes, by definition the kind of thing only a AC of S, A-1 (personnel) would do. They also have best access to stores :)

roughwear A2

Newcomer here. Now that I know where all you experts are, I'd like to find out where I could get a good A2 - Roughwear or otherwise. I have a beat up B3 that my unccle gave me, a G1 with patches from the 542 Marine Night Fighter Squadron, a Lewis LA motor cop jacket, and a couple of Canadian all leather varsity jackets. Small collection, but nice.

If you want an original A2 I would recommend Ebay. Sometimes A2s are advertised on this and other forums. Good luck in your search.
