Not exactly, certainly, unless you use this as a litotes. One difference - of many - was that the GDR population might have been less convinced of their leadership and state. So, if you call somebody "a Nazi German", that's much more of a bad guy than "a GDR German". But an army officer?! Not a private soldier doing his compulsory service, but somebody fully in the system, and part of it?

BTW, if a GDR army officer was a believing communist, I might have less difficulties with him than with either a believing Nazi or a GDR opportunist, but anyway, I couldn't bring myself to wearing a symbol of either system.

I remember in the 80s nd 90s, communist clothing, watches etc were quite hip mongst the new wave crowd. It didn't suggest any affinity for communism. They were just an odd exotic piece of clothing. I wouldn't ever assume someone was a communist sympathiser just because they wore an overcoat. For tht matter, being a communist does not have the same stigma in much of the world as it does here. The US government worked very hard to villify the term such that it is stil an insult thrown around today at anyone who is left leaning. "What are you, a commie or something?"

Sounds like someone is a crypto commie symp.

Judge by deeds and words, not clothes. Unless it's a Che t-shirt, that guy needs to be mocked and insulted.

Very Flashy Aquascutum Topcoat

I was poking through the racks at the local thrift store today when this baby jumped out and grabbed me. Beautiful, thick wool in the most brazen houndstooth check I've ever seen. I have no idea where (or if) I'll ever wear it, but it was in so flamboyant I just had to buy it. It's in mint condition - the original owner prolly never had the nerve to wear it in public.

Any thoughts on its date or reason for existance?

In the boring world of everyone wearing their grays, browns, and khakis it is nice to see something so bold. It takes a confident fellow to wear it. Go for it.

It appears to be a coat which would have been part of a country wardrobe and would have not have be worn for business in the city (though possibly for city weekend wear).

As for dating, a photo of the labels and lining would be helpful.

I'm definitely going to wear this coat, but it's just a tad too snug (38 - I wear a 40), to fit properly over a suit. I think it'll work with an Irish fisherman's turtleneck, though.

This overcoat was made pre-1949 by a local Denver tailor. It says it's made of "Llamawool," and has a luster I can't capture in a picture. I have more pictures here.

I got my first overcoat today. It shall be from the 60´s or early 70´s, but I think that the designs don´t change too rapidly. It´s made of wool and the color is actually much lighter than on the first photo and a bit darker than in the second one.

The coat is from the mid-70's or later. The reason I know this is because at that time I briefly dated the daughter of the head of Aquascutum's North American division and I recall him commenting on the status of the newly opened Canadian factory. Prior to then Aquascutum was manufactured solely in the UK.

40s Swedish Tank Corps Great Coat

I found this late 40s Swedish tank corps great coat here in a thrift store in Santa Barbara, California (!) a few months ago. Gotta love the lightning-shooting tank lapel insignia, huh? And the tiger tag was cool too.

Sold it on eBay awhile back. Winner didn't even leave me feedback, sheesh.[huh]
