Child disciplined for wearing Halloween costume to school

A Tulsa parent is outraged over how her child was disciplined at school for wearing a costume.

Crystal Harris says her 5-year old son was forced to take off his costume, and go through the entire school day with only his underwear on.

The incident happened Monday at Walt Disney Elementary.

School officials acknowledge they have a policy that forbids costumes, and that's why the teacher did what she did.

They say they've have apologized to the family.

Harris says however the teacher should be disciplined for embarassing her son.

Harris' son has not been back to school since the incident, and she says she's considering legal action.

You know if he was a wearing a Mickey Mouse costume this wouldn't have happened. (okay someone had to say it)

Seriously though, where's the common sense of this teacher. She should have sent him to the office to call home and have a change of clothes brought up to the school.

I find it amazing how many teacher's argue against merit raises because they say they're all competent. And yet on a weekly basis, we read about how a teacher or principal does something really stupid. Hmmm.....

Well, the merit raises that they've talked about doing here in Texas (thanks in part to Rep: Kent Grussendorf -or Grussendork as I like to call him) have to do partly with student performance on a state mandated test. To many teachers, that's unfair, as you can't help what lot you're sometimes dealt in terms of students. That would be like telling an artist to paint something amazing but not giving him any paint to use and then awarding the painter according to output (or lack of output).

A few high profile cases (Mary-Kay Letourneau and a few others) have put teachers under increased scrutiny in the past few years. The press loves when a teacher messes up, because they've painted teachers as sexually unhinged borderline psychopaths who are to blame for all the problems in our education system. It's approaching a witchhunt level, especially here in New York City, where if you lay a hand on a students shoulder, you can end up in handcuffs. I'm currently in an undergrad program to become a school speech-pathologist and have done some observation in elementary schools. I was instructed, if a child tried to hug me out of affection or appreciation, to put my hands straight up in the air until the student stopped. Thankfully, no one liked me enough to hug me. :p A friend of mine who is a NYC school teacher has told me plenty of horror stories about what parents have tried to pull on her over the most innocuous of actions.

Please don't misunderstand, what the teacher did in this case was stupid and wrong on several levels. The parent and the child both have a right to be outraged. I am outraged. Some teachers do do stupid things, but so do construction workers, policemen, firemen, bankers, stevedores, businessmen, taxi drivers, and basically any other grouping of people you can think of.

I guess my main point is, you might hear about a teacher or principal doing something crazy every week, but think of the thousands more who are doing things right and improving kid's lives.

Sorry to go all crazy about this, but it's a bit of sore spot of mine. Time for a

Holy moly! Send the kid home, don't take his clothes away! They are supposed to be the adults and the kid is just a kid. Respond to that as an adult, not as a vengeful child. The mother is also somewhat suspicious for not keeping up with what is happening at school.

What would they have done if the kid were wearing 'Underoos"?

O.K., I guess they haven't made those in about 20 years..;) but what if the kid was a junior Lounge member and was costumed right down to his scivvies....

Yes, well said Uberneot. Having taught elementary for 7 years, I would rarely instigate a hug, but would pat kids on the back for encouragement. But if a kid instigated a hug, I'd hug back. Maybe I was in the wrong, but I know if I were a kid, I wouldn't want my teacher to not return the hug (I only did sideways hugs though). Now that I teach 7th grade, I don't have kids instigating hugs, which is fine by me. I've done high fives with my 7th graders though. But unfortunately there are a select few teachers who don't use common sense and give the profession a bad rap with bad press.
