This is the last post I will make to this thread.

But I would like to point out that if you follow and believe what you have stated above, then there is absolutely no reason for you to say things to me like

and

Both of which -dismiss- my opinion as not valid simply because I don't agree about this thread's usefulness.

Either you count 'every data point' and accept them as valid if not in agreement....or you don't, but don't claim that this is any useful study or discourse on things when you summarily and rudely dismiss anyone who does not play your game or agree with the idea that discussing this serves a purpose.

Miss Neecerie, A technical question first: How do you insert multiple quotes in a response like you did?

I do not dismiss your opinions "simply because I don't agree about this thread's usefulness." It is the fact that you post without any preface, state your conclusions and then leave without engaging in any discourse, until now, only to repost days later again with cryptic criticism, or when you, as you put it " summarily and rudely dismiss anyone who does not play your game or agree with the idea that discussing this serves [no] purpose."

You state you are not going to post again and then you lob criticisms. What is one to think?

I hold the door open to anyone on this lounge, even or maybe especially you lurkers, to come into a shelter from the storm of unruly discourse. All we ask is good natured, if at times cutting humor, while we try to trap for study an elusive & prickly concept: snobbery.

I suppose game theoyr's tit for tat tactic doesn't always work, eh?

Excerpt from Snobbery, The American Version by Joseph Epstein

Takeaways: Snobbery keeps changing depending on what situation you're in. Epstein deals with regional snobs, ethnic snobs, class snobs, school snobs, intellectual snobs, automotive snobs. Some of his reminiscence might be a bit dated, having come up during the 1950s, a high water mark in American snobbery, when everybody was doing it.

Not you too Fletch. I never thought you would stoop to high brow, egghead reading. :p
Now I have to figure ways to come up with examples for almost all of those in context. :p ;)
I bet Epstein is from a low-class Northeast family, who graduated from a public institution with a low GPA and drives a VW bus. ;) :p

I see we woke the egghead contingent again. ;) :p I'll have to light up a cigar again and watch the battle of defining terms and enjoy my scotch. Carry on, it amuses me to no end. ;) :p

Ah, its good to see the lead antiseptic squarehead is back. If there are any words, concepts, subtle nuances that you need help in understanding, please feel free to ask. We like your company, oh and pass a glass of that scotch, but only if it's at least ten years old.:D :D

I understand such concepts etc but they are fasr too trifling to bother with as I have better things to do with my computer time such as watching the stock market. sniff sniff (in Thurston Howell III voice)
I am glad that you at least have good taste in scotch. I would hate to waste good scotch on a philistine. :p ;)

Joseph Epstein (born January 9, 1937) is a Chicagoan essayist, short story writer, and editor, best known as a former editor of the Phi Beta Kappa Society's The American Scholar magazine and for his recent essay collection, Snobbery: The American Version. He was also a lecturer at Northwestern University from 1974 - 2002. He is a Contributing Editor at The Weekly Standard and a long-time contributor of essays and short stories to Commentary. The late William F. Buckley, Jr. in his review of Snobbery called Epstein the wittiest writer alive.

Are irony and satire new concepts to you? :p

Ah, that explains you dyspepsia: "watching the stock market." Everybody, this man needs some comforting words.

Of course. Don't you see the irony of the fact that this guy is writing about snobbery and he is "a former editor of the Phi Beta Kappa Society's The American Scholar magazine." Clearly ivory tower and having fun at their expense. :p ;)

I do I do I do see. And The Weakly (sic) Standard, a model of inclusiveness.

I do love this. Thanks Fletch.
I do also love this mental ping pong.
It does well I think to try and expand your mind and not necessarily do away with any of your core values as it takes so many factors to make us who we are.
I will say and hope it is ok that when Doran speaks it is like I am trying to put barbells on my brain. Refreshing really. I know we are worlds apart but think somehow he would be a great mediator.
I have been able to travel in last few years and I guess it is good to get off the farm so to speak.
My friends went to India and China recently. They actually talked to people who no kidding didn't know what a America was. Had no concept of it.
I ran into a guy in Scotland that thought all Texans were like J.R.Ewing and Dallas. Not too sure the Scot wasn't pulling my leg but the station in life he was in would make me believe he was telling me the truth.
I totally know now why Doran has such a beautiful wife. lol
