Indeed. It takes real strength to be able to say "this is who and what I am, take me or leave me as you will; either way, I really don't care" and mean it, and that strength and the associated self-confidence are some of the most attractive qualities out there.

fftopic: Of course, I should have also adjusted for the fact that I do have a distinctly unfair advantage: virtually all of my relatives are career or economic "dead ends", and I'm the only one with any shot left at "going anywhere"--and when someone is in that position and reaches the stage of "push me too hard, and I'm gone and you're all up the creek", it gives that person one heck of a lot of leverage to use in "attitude-adjustment." Alas, it can't be used very often, or it'll lose its "intimidation factor"...

Oh, BTW, learning to master the "in one ear and out the other" thing really helps, too. A favorite line I've used many times: "Clarify: Opinion, yours, relevance of."

As it stands, today I now hoard...er...own what appears to be one of the largest ladies suit collections on the Lounge from completely ignoring my mother's advice. I can't tell you how many times I am complimented on my suits and good fashion sense from ignoring her!

If she really gets on you too much, here's another tactic I used for some fun: I dressed really trashy or punk or whatever I knew my mother wouldn't like and really played it up. The next day I would revert back to vintage again and if she complained, I asked her if I looked better in yesterday's outfit instead.

It's a very fun game (for you, anyway).

wait what? haha j/k yea, I need to practice the in one ear and out the other thing with ALOT of things in my life... it's ridiculous really... sick of being told how to live

yes, it's not only the vintage thing, it's pretty much everything in my life too that she has a say in... your little game sounds like fun, I was actually thinking of that too lol hmmm maybe I could get a job too while I'm at it, walking the streets at night in nothing.... not bad not bad... we'd see how much she likes that compared to my "grandma" looks...
