San Francisco voters BAN HANDGUNS

The Liberal voters in San Francisco have passed a bill that will immediatly make any ownership of a handgun a crime.
This really scares me. Do you think the gang banger, street thug, crook will turn in his gun? HAHa!
I WANT my gun to protect myself from those out there! Didn't the Nazi's ban and confiicate guns first?
Guns should not be possessed by everone, and laws are everywhere controlling them. Don't you think it is time to hold
PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE for their actions?

Just like the Liberal Idot's who want to put a "suicide barrier" on the Golden Gate Bridge, to prevent jumpers. Duh? They will find another tall structure, won't they!

NRA sues to overturn San Francisco gun ban

SAN FRANCISCO - The National Rifle Association sued Wednesday to overturn an ordinance voters here overwhelmingly approved a day earlier that bans handgun possession and sales of firearms in the city.

A state appeals court in 1982 nullified a similar gun ban largely on grounds that the city cannot enact an ordinance that conflicts with state law, which allows for the sale and possession of handguns and ammunition.

The NRA filed its lawsuit Wednesday asking the same court, the 1st District Court of Appeal, to nullify the ordinance, which demands that city residents surrender their handguns by April.

"Cities do not have the authority under the state law to ban the possession of handguns," said Wayne LaPierre, NRA president.

The NRA also contends the new ordinance unfairly puts San Francisco residents at a disadvantage by denying them the means to protect themselves. The measure does not bar nonresidents from possessing handguns within city limits.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera said his office will vigorously defend the ordinance, which was approved by 58 percent of voters.

"The electorate sent a strong message that local governments have a strong role in curbing violence in our streets," Herrera said.

He said the 1982 measure was overturned because it applied to all people within city limits, regardless of whether they lived there.

Mayor Gavin Newsom has said the measure probably won't withstand legal scrutiny, but has symbolic value.

The NRA is not alleging the ordinance violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but it would in federal court if it loses the state case, LaPierre said."

That's absurd. I have a friend that lives there who would have to give up a LARGE firearms collection of rare collector weapons.

Let's remember that Prop H takes effect in January and the citizens would have 60 days to turn int heir weapons if there were no injunction in the process. The lawsuits could drag on for years as did Roberti-Roos.
My advice would be to just hang on and keep what you have because it will not likely pass constitutional muster after the years of litigation. The other choice would be to simply sell them before the ban takes place so either way it is not a good idea to let go of that gun just yet.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the city had to buy guns to replace those turned in if and when the ban is overturned in court.

Wow, do you think it will start a trend. Ins't unconstituional?

How can a city ban a constitutional right? Do they really think that us gunowners are going to give up our carefully picked, 30 year old, beloved gun collections? Are they going to check everyones home like good old Nazi Germany did? It may be a beautiful city but living here is starting to resemble the Twilight Zone a little too much.
A few years ago the city council wanted tobacco shops to stop selling tobacco and tobacco related products. They wanted the tobacco shops to morph into gift shops. They settled on a smoking ban in Golden Gate Park. You can't sit on a park bench and enjoy a pipefull without fear of reproach or loosing some money to a ticket :rage: . It is a reversed view of the dreaded right wing wackos that this city hates so much. This city does not realize that reasonable people view a complete handgun ban as crazy and unreasonable as banning demonstrations (which is a hobby for some nut jobs here) or books. I say you deserve what you vote for.
We all thought Frank Zappa was giving an extreme point of view when he said, "If you let them ban lyrics in rock n' roll songs, the next thing you know, they are going to ban tobacco." He was right. :cry: Legalize adulthood.

It is interesting that Mayor Newsome admits that the measure has only "symbolic value". He seems to be building his reputation by backing measures that are only symbolic. Underneath the carefuly coiffed hair is anybody home? San Francisco deserves better.

I hope it ends up being as symbolic as the gay marriage episode was. Not that I am against gay marriage but in other words, I hope forces stronger than Newsom stomp this one out also. San Francisco does deserve better.

So let me get this straight the current mayor of San Fran. is just a talker and just does stuff to look good, but dosen't follow through?

I am soooo glad to not have to deal with that kind of stupid, weak-minded thinking now that I live in Washington. In fact as soon as I get back from the QM, I am going down and getting my concealed carry permit. $60 and a clean record and it is a done deal in my state.

Very true, but if I revield my expressions it would... Anyhow, it wasn't sacasism, it was parafrasing to see if I got the facts right.

I am SOOO with you MK...another week and I will be doing the same in Oregon, same law.
I was born here in the Bay Area and believe with all my heart that this is the most beautiful place on earth, but too many people have gotten stuck on stupid for me to deal with anymore. I was here for the riots in the 60s, the quakes, the freezes, the fires. All of this can be handled in time and made well. I can't handle the "stupid"

Thanks Mycroft. Not yet, but it's close. We moved in about 10 days ago, at least halfway. I'm home in SF for 36 hours, then off to the Summit, then back to Oregon with yet another Uhaul trip. The shop will be completed in about 2 weeks so it's getting exciting.

Why do you assume it was just Liberals? And why do you call liberals Idots? Seems there are a lot of idots on both sides if you want to label people.

Seriously, this is the sort of thing that just makes me sick about politicians. Wasting time and money on "symbolic" laws. Not only was it a waste of taxpayer money to put the issue on the ballot in the first place, it's going to be an even bigger waste of money when it goes to court.

And San Francisco is the leader in wasting money on over the top "symbolic" laws. Meanwhile, everyone thinks it's an expensive city to live in because of real estate.

When I was younger I lived for a time in the Bay Area. It's always been a wacko city Beautiful, yes but defenetly in their own world. MK, fogive my ignorance but I foolishly assumed that Wahington was a, how should I say it, left of left Where does the state "lean" and I envy you. It takes three blood tests, finger printing with retnal scans and your first born to get a firearm here in Kahlifornia. Forget a CCW. I want to move so bad.....
