What the heck does Jughead wear?

Scallop Hat

I have seen this kind of hat referred to as a 'Scallop' Hat or cap. I have instructions for how to make one somewhere if anyone is interested. To the best of my memory, it involves putting an old felt fedora on a pot, and then putting that pot on another pot that has water boiling in it. Once the felt is steamed enough, it gets very pliable, and then you can cut the scallops in with a pair of scissors and turn them up.

The title of the book is "How to Be a Kid Again," and it has a lot instructions on how to do things from the Depression.

hm. This sounds like a neat-o rainy day project using a (very) inexpensive Burlington Coat Factory wool fedora?!

I actually remember in one of the old Archie funny books there was a one-page strip on how to make a hat like Forsythe P. Jones'. It exactly involving taking a Fedora and a pair of scissors...

I'm not sure a wool fedora would respond to steaming the same way?

Hello, One of the Bowery Boys did wear one. Also known as "The Dead End Gang". I think these hats were also called Palookaville Caps or Hats.

I don't see how you could get a fedora brim to stay up like that unless you flip the whole hat inside out.

I have always liked "Jughead Hats".

Because all the people that really mattered in the 30s were kids, except for like FDR and Hitler and Rudy Vallée and Dillinger of course.

I am all about the 30s, really, but the 70s nostalgia for the 30s mostly sucked eggs.

You guys may can pull Jughead's hat off, but can you pull his amount of hot dogs and hamburgers from Pop Tates?

I love Archie Comics, and I honestly had no idea what style of hat Jughead had. No clue that is was a revamped fedora. I just assumed it was a crown.

I had one of those hats when I was a kid. Genuine from my grandparent's days! It was not in any way made from a fedora, I can tell you that. It was lightweight, floppy, black felt. I'd still have it, except I had a very destructive puppy that managed to reach very high places when I wasn't looking.

It took years to figure out how she got that high... until I saw her leap over a coffee table and a couch in one jump without effort.

These new repros seem to be a little long. I think the original style involved cutting the brim off, and then cutting the points from the crown so about half the crown was folded up.

I think it was prett much a kid thing and for an adult to wear one was obviously not about being a mechanic, but being portrayed as simple or child like.

And fear not, i doubt many good hats back in the day got tyreated as such. Surely any good hat would be reused until it was unwearable, then handed over to the kid.

See, that would be perfect. Cut triangles into the crown about three inches and your are all set.

I must say, while they are a cool bit of americana, I doubt anyone over 18 or so could really pull one off. On the other hand, Jughead must be pushing about sixty now. But he seems to be holding up pretty well.

What would be really cool is if they had an Archie comic book that was all the characters at what their real age would be if they were all around in high school in the thirties.
