Jos. A. Bank and the "Panama"

Having to scrounge up something quickly, I was forced to go mall crawling yesterday, something I don't savor. In the course of my wanderings, I went into the Jos. A. Bank store and happened to see a straw hat sitting on a display. The sign proclaimed it a "genuine Panama". The straw was wide and flattened, coarse and loosely woven, irregular. It didn't have the "spring" of a decent Cuenca. It had bits of straw ends sticking out in various places. The brim edge was sewn down, but not nicely like the one I got from Panama Bob, which seems glued and sewn - this was sloppy and already coming undone.

It really didn't look or feel as good as a straw hat from Ecuador that I bought for $20 in 1990, when I first came to Atlanta.

I turned the hat over and looked at the price tag. $358. I almost choked to death.

Imagine how a buyer would feel if he later saw one of Panama Bob's typical eBay offerings and learned how much that cost. :eusa_doh: :rage:

3 Cuenca from PB

For two years I have really enjoyed my Montecristi from panamabob. But because of my haste in purchasing, I've always wanted a taller, more "American" c-crown/teardrop shape. I'd also decided I needed a looser weave for more airflow and less heat.

Robert helped me decide on a Diamante Cuenca. He recommended Brisa for the best airflow, but only had Llano in my size. (And again, I didn't really want to wait.) I also wanted a San Lorenzo for a gift. It, too is Llano Cuenca. The price was so low, I also bought a Brisa Cuenca Planter for mowing and working in.

They arrived today. I got just what I wanted: a nicely shaped, taller, cooler hat for everyday wear, a cooler, shadier hat for yardwork, and a nice looking hat that I think will be a nice gift for someone interested in a summer hat.

Great hats and great photos.

I'm really pleased with my 2 Diamantes from PB. Both are llano weave Cuenca's...one with a cloth sweatband and the other with a leather one.

I've ordered this hat (see below) from PB with a medium brown ribbon. It's a real tight Brisa weave.

Hat without ribbon:

Ribbon samples; I chose the 2nd from right, based on Robert's recommendation:

Sweatband choices; I chose the one in the middle:

Should be here tomorrow, so will post photos of all 3 then.

I just got my San Juan yesterday. It's my first panama and is absolutely beautiful. I don't have a weave count on it, or any pictures of my own yet. Will post them when I can, hopefully over the weekend.

Bob's right. Compare these, even the 'lower end' hats to some you see in the stores (see Woodfluters post above) and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better hat at a better price.

Is that a Stickley copy?

but probably not a Stickley COPY, in the strict sense. I've always loved Mission furniture, and my wonderful wife bought this as a 25th Anniversary/Retirement/Master's Degree present. It is from Bassett Furniture, I believe; and their brand, I think. It's very comfortable and looks very nice, I think.

What I'm looking for now is a Mission hat tree or at least as good a knock off as this chair. I suppose I might be able to make one.

Here's the chair, reclined, with the new Cuenca Diamante on the left, and my first Panama, the low-crowned Montecristi on the right(in my C-crown reblock).

Okay, two of my Panamabob Cuencas arived today. They are very nice. When the spouse returns from Australia with the digital camera, I will post pics. Now for the stupid question. What is the correct way to place and remove the hats atop my head.

That chair is aslo reminiscent of the FLW chairs in the Robie (?) house with the nice modern recliner touch...very clever piece of adaption there... your missus is all class...

I am glad you got that one. I darn near stepped in to give you a little competition, glad I didn't. That looks like it has some real potential, I can't wait to see it.

Here's a commissioned Montecristi that arrived yesterday. It is about 1150 weaves per square inch. Unblocked, 4 inch crown, 4 inch brim. I'll try to get some photos of it when it is finished.

I have a 1600+ in the mail and a 1400+, too.
