I started watching AVP: Requiem last night.

Last of the Mohicans takes place in 1757 and concerns a drama in the midst of the French and Indian War. The action is different from the much later plains warfare.

I realize that, I was speaking in general terms, i.e. it wasn't a "sanitized" version of the type of conflict. I'm trying not to get too graphic, but some of the type of actions they depicted would never make it into a film today, not even the 1992 version. The plains warfare may have been different, but was no less bloody.

Billy Bob Thornton did well in this role. He's one of the few actors that can say nearly nothing and pull it off. Most actors with few lines but many appearances come across as deadpan or wooden, but not BBT. Does James Gandolfini ever play a role where he's not punching and kicking someone? But then, I've only seen him in Sopranos and this movie.

Gandolfini was also in Get Shorty, a great movie btw, one of my favorites. Of course "he's punching and kicking someone". He was also in Lonely Hearts, with Travolta and Salma Hayek. A pretty good period piece as well. I don't remember if he punches and kicks anyone though.

Two magicians have a rivalry because one killed his wife. Okay, good. But it kept going around in time, almost incoherently, as these 'two' men kept sabotaging each others career.

I saw the end for one of the men a mile away, but the other, come on! That was silly and totally unbelievable. Prestige, indeed.
What a lame pay off.

That would be due to the the touch of director Christoper Nolan. His films like Memento, Insomnia, Batman, Prestige, etc. use flashback as an integral part of the storytelling process.

It made sense in Memento and Insomnia, where you were suppose to be a bit up in the air. I just didnt care about these people at all (except David Bowie, he was cool!) because we only got a superficial take on them. And I was weirded out by Jackman and Johansen's kisses, ew!

Also, I loved seeing one of my favorite actors from the TV show Rescue Me say, "GET TO THE CHOPPER."

Mamma Mia

On Tuesday evening I saw the "sneak preview" of Mamma Mia (movie) featuring the music of ABBA. I never saw the stage production, but I have to say the movie is unique and entertaining. Enough of a plot to keep it interesting. Good musical. Lots of singing and dancing. Great if you like the music of Abba, which I do. As to genre, wow, how about musical, music video, romantic comedy, beach movie, chic flick, Greek wedding, father of the bride, all rolled into one. It was fast paced, funny, at times hilarious, and entertaining. :eusa_clap

Everything was so damn dark! I couldn't make anything out on screen. [huh] lol
Between those goofy teenagers (which must be added to the retired plotline thread) , the boring army mom and her daughter, blah. I didn't care if the entire town was destroyed. A couple of the actions sequences were good but overall I could not sit through it again.

ooh, i'm excited to see Mama Mia!

a couple days ago i took my friend's 11-year-old daughter to see Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. we both loved it! it was funny, sweet, and totally tear-jerking. we both really loved the costumes! there were lots of fun historical details thrown in. lots of familiar faces, too... Kit is played by the little girl who starred in "Little Miss Sunshine"; Joan Cusack has a supporting role, Julia Ormond and Chris O'Connell played the parents, and look out for Will Smith's kid, as well!

Not sure if it's exactly television or a movie (it was made for almost nothing, cast and crew both working for free during the Writer's Strike) because it's independently produced for the internet with zero studio input.
But it's amazing.

I just recently saw "The Wackness" starring Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck. I have to admit, for a film set in in the 1994 revolving around a teenage drug dealer and his psychologist, I enjoyed it.
