Will jeans be going out of fashion?

I suspect "fashion or designer jeans" may run their course in the not too distant future, but regular jeans will continue on. I have worn Levis most my life starting in the 1930's and I still wear Levi 501s (nearly every day since I retired in 2006). I probably have 40 or 50 pair of 501s, some in pretty faded disrepair. I sometimes have a little problem finding 501s in 38 inch length. I wear 30 inch waist, 38 inch length, but sometimes have to settle for 36" L. Most of the longer ones come in bigger waist sizes, and even the 30s slowly slide down as the day progresses. I got a pair of denin coveralls at Tractor Supply a few weeks ago but I don't like them much. They make me feel like an old man and I'm only 76. (that's supposed to be a joke, I think). As for going out of style, all the retailers here in Alabama farm country have stacks and stacks of jeans, mostly Levi, Lee and Wrangler.

In answer to the thread title, I sincerely doubt a type of clothing that has existed for 150 years+ in this nation is suddenly going to go away.

Not go away, merely lose it's place in pop culture.

What we're talking about here is designer styles that EVERYONE is wearing ALL the time. I think we're all aware that denim will remain, but the question is, will it go back to it's intended purpose of work wear?

I would be afraid to wear a pair of anything that cost over $1800. I'd rather buy 3 pair of high quality 30's repro. jeans from Japan (in my dreams,that is. The most I've paid for Japanese LVCs is $170).

I think it should stay as it's intended work wear. I don't find it very fashionable, though I do wear pedal pushers and folded cuff jeans a lot when I'm out, it's all I have left right now that fits as I'm shrinking, but hey I can pull anything off, give me a potato sack and I'll turn that thing into a gown! lol just kidding.

I find them great where I work though, I'm in a hardware environment and with box cutters and drywall, rebar, and plenty of other bulky dangerous things, I've found jeans are the only things that really protect my stems from looking like I fell off my bike!

That leads to an interesting question, then. *Why* are jeans the national costume of the last thirty-odd years? There are other pants that are better looking, other pants that are far more comfortable, other fabrics that are more sturdy. Why did jeans, a garment originally intended for farmers and laborers, catch on and not some other sort of workwear of the day? Why doesn't everybody today wear canvas duck work pants?

Maybe to you. I'm not shelling out $40+, and certainly not $100+ for pants I'm going to wear out and throw away when I can get essentially the same thing for $12 from Dickies. The average person can't tell the difference between a $400 pair of jeans and a $12 pair of jeans, and to those who can tell the difference, I'm not interested in their approval.

I just changed a fuel line under my car during my lunch break, crawling around on the ground, getting gasoline on my hands and arms. No way would I do that in a pair of expensive repro jeans, or even a pair that cost more than $20. What's the point of wearing work wear if you're afraid to beat it up?

I almost considered removing the little red Dickies tag from the back pocket. I hate visible logos or brands on my clothing, and I'm slowly eradicating them from my wardrobe.

"Essentially the same...". Well, they are both called "Jeans" and both "Blue" but that's where the similarity stops.

Many of us must be above average, since we CAN tell the difference between $12 Jeans and the more expensive ones. I quite often get comments when wearing the LVC jeans- people ask where I bought them- they definitely can see the difference. They can see that there's just something different and desirable about them, although they may not realise that they're vintage repros. The colour, fit and detailing are far different.

Personally, I wouldn't wear my "Vintage" Levis under the car, not anymore, they're special. Just like you probably wouldn't wear one of your vintage suits under the car.

The "Vintage" jeans are casual-wear in my world of dressing, not chore-wear.

You simply cannot beat the look and style of the vintage repro jeans-
modern, cheap, mall jeans are no replacement but of course they ARE perfect work-wear.

I have absolutely no problem paying more for high quality repro denim, and I do work, play, and everything else in them. You get what you pay for. I can tell the difference and that's what matters to me, I'm not out for approval I'm just obsessed with the details, quality, durability, and subtleties of vintage jeans and work wear! One of my many curses - I'm the same with repro khaki's, sweatshirts, you name it. The more authentically vintage in contruction the higher the quality. Period. And I treat them roughly because they can take it, for years! How long do $12 jeans last?

I don't know how a very practical work garment became a fashion statement. Designer Jeans seems like an oxymoron to me.

Wishful thinking perhaps? The overuse of the casual attire such as jeans is an unfortunate problem. They have their place, but they are for sure over done.
