It's a puzzle. Absolutely nothing about this suit says Germanic tailoring tradition to me, and most certainly not English. It's almost a copy of an American suit of the era. The only exception being the very high set inner breast pockets.

I would love to have this in my hands to make a better comments. This juror reserves his judgement. [huh]

I'd love to know what the trouser pocket linings are made of.

have you ever seen 3 inside jacket pockets from this period though? The small one on the lower inside area is the weirdest to me, considering the era it could be from..?! :eusa_doh:
I'll take a look at the pockets and get back to you on that :)

And thanks Douglas about the info on that! I would have never guessed that! If you remember, I still owe you a beer from last time.... want to take me up on the offer soon?

I have a 1943 dated double breasted with three inside pockets, same setup as yours, but mine's skeleton lined.

I have a suit tucked away somewhere that I picked up at a thrift store. The label is from somewhere in skandanavia, can't remember specifically. But it is dated about 57. But the style looks like about 45 or so and not at all 57. The fabric is a heavier cable stripe like this one. I suppose it would not be hard to imagine old world tailor shops doing things the same way for many years, especially for older clients. Plus, fabric may sit around for years before someone decides to use it. So if it is a tailor shop, all bets are off.

Yes,..the question of just how long did the fabric sit idle, and was it maybe a suit made for an older gentleman at that time?
The fact that the vest's buttons are different from the rest of the suit's. suggests different times for the making of parts of the suit. Maybe the buttons of the vest were replaced at a time when the matching color was in short supply? A later repair to make due during war time, or soon after? [huh]

Yes. One German odd jacket [probably] from the 30s and one dated 1954 have these pockets. I also have a British jacket somewhere with 3 inner pockets but that's irrelevant to this discussion.

It's a fine 3-piece suit. If it creeps you out, sell it to someone who'll appreciate it.
If it makes you feel any better, it could've belonged to a member of the underground movement. [huh]

No you certainly arent wearing a nazi suit the flag on the label is a british naval flag or jack and highly unlikely to be found on a suit in 1930s-40s Deutschland but i agree the cut is odd for a british suit of this era so possibly from some where in the former British Empire but given that that comprises 1/4 of the earth tracing it down may be difficult

Google has various mentions of mister Berger's "Zur englisher Flotte", it was a renowned fashion house in Vienna, on the Kartnerstrasse. There was a Burberry coat with an Englisher Flotte label on ebay.austria earlier this year.

Another article from Der Spiegel mentions the "englischer" part was dropped during nazidays, a Cafe Westminster became Kafe Westmuenster.

This may be the third time I mention it, but really, Karl Kraus was talking about the First World War.

Well, my apologies Mr. Cohen.

I'll admit that I'm a very selective reader, 95% of what's posted on the Lounge doesn't interest me at all.

I was only trying to point out the fact that the Flotte was a shop, not a maker, as no-one did before, or I must have missed that one ,too.
EDIT: Ai,Ai,Ai, YOU did... A Haberdashery is a men's outfitter in the States, here they sell buttons and stuff.

A bit later I found that bit that mentioned dropping the english part, it said 1936 in the context, turns out to be the year Kraus died, Mea Culpa.

I hesitate to say but Google also came up with someone buying a suit at Die Englische Flotte,in Vienna, in 1986.

Yes, another interesting find I have tucked away is a suit made in 1959 according to the label. looks just like a simple, wooly 30s or even 20s suit even has a belt onteh back of the trousers. But, the best part is the vest has a label with a different date. About a year later. Same fabric and buttons, but made a year apart. I can only guess he had the suit made then decided to go for a vest a little later.

I suppose it might have dropped out of fashion during the war, but I am sure that English goods were still appreciated and sought out. I would bet that many of the officers and high staff had english riding boots etc. Just because you were at war, did not mean you hated the enemy. Not at the higher levels. The higher levels knew that war was just a means to their ends. they left it to the common man, with a great amount of help, to hate the enemy. So I guess a shop might not do so well by selling english style suits, although if they catered to teh wealthy, probably less of an issue.
