The national WWII memorial dedication

Well it is about time!! Almost 59 years after the end of the second world war and eleven years after President Clinton authorized it, the national World War II memorial will finally be dedicated on May 29, 2004. This is a long over due, but well deserved, tribute to the men and women who served in this global conflict against tyranny, the men and women of ?¢‚Ǩ?ìThe Greatest Generation.?¢‚Ǩ? This hasn't received much press (at least not much that I have seen), so I thought I would share it here. Here is the website with more information.

This is good news:

Due to the overwhelming demand and extensive wait list for tickets, we will no longer accept ticket requests for the Salute to WWII Veterans, but we will accept wait list requests for dedication ceremony tickets until further notice.

It's good to know that this many people appreciate the sacrifice. Personally, I wish it were 100% of the people who did, but there are always a few bad apples.

I find double feelings for this

You would say "that's great" to honor the best generation this country produced who fought in the great WWII.

But then ask: what took so long?

Most of the WWII Vets are either dead or in their late 70's - 80's and maybe 90's.

My dad died last summer; he was a WWII Vet , having served as a Radioman in the USN. Guess he didn't live to see this wonderful thing, and he was almost 82.

Still, it is for the survivors, children of the men and women, a fine tribute. I salute all of those past, present, and yes, the future who fight for freedom.

Can't wait to go down and see it. My neighbor was head forman on the job!
