Lemme tell you fellas, that Medalist model IS a hat-and-a-half. I'm very curious about the origins of these as the ones I got must be early examples. Note the actual organic reed showing in the underside photo. All elements sewn in. No glueing. Super quality leather. Embossed insignia including, yes, the "VITA-FELT PROCESS" schtick. And the felt is on the order of very old Borsalinos I have.

Measurements:
Raw Edge Brim (measured underneath from very outer edge of reed)
2-9/16" front, 2-5/8" sides, 2-3/4" rear.

Crown
5-3/4" max open.
As I have it bashed it's 4-1/4" at front pinch, 4-1/2" at sides and 3-7/8" at back.

Oh, and one more unique thing. You know how some of them are marked whatever the size is then, "Long Oval"? This one has a tag that reads,

Back to the old favorite

Well, I'm back to the ol' Akubra Squatter. By golly, it's just my favorite hat. It suits me better than all my others. Fits wonderfully, and looks as good on me as any hat. I like the color, not too dark, not too light. I like the brim, with the snap in the back, and the lightly curled edge even in the front. I like the crease I put in it. It has held up VERY well. I have worn it for much of a year, working outside in sun, rain, heat, and snow. It shows no real signs of the dreaded "taper", and I have been very pleased with it.

OK, I wasn't really wearing the tie today, I just put it on for the photos. It's a pretty keen '40's tie, and it's brown! My favorite color.

I really like it on you too. A great choice in both color and style. I can see this hat being worn with casual clothes as well as a suit. Nice all around lid for you.

Ya know how some hats just stand out...that medalist is one of them!:eusa_clap ...You can see the softness in the image...It "looks" like one of those fine antique hats, that's drooled over(and I am drooling)....I'll keep my eye open for one....

Great look Fats, just a bit comment, I think with that brown shirt, khaki color pants would look better than jeans... but it's just me.

I got this one back about 6 months ago but never wore it. It wasn't really my style and I thought it a bit too 'pimpish' (even though it's a western style hat). Plus it had some bad moth holes (on the top of the crown) and it is super soft, perhaps too soft. I have a hard time getting it to keep a bash even with steam.

Well, I've revisited it and I've fallen in love with it. Finally.

Don't know the name of it but it's the competitor to the Dobbs "Gay Lord". It's Imperial Stetson quality, that's all it says on the inside.

I think the Dobbs version was the "Gay Prince". I didn't know there was such a spot on match for it in a Stetson. I find that cool tap water dampened onto the hat by hand all over and then shaped and allowed to dry tends to set a shape better than steam. I do not wet the liner.

I used to use steam all the time - now very rarely.

I brush it well first to remove dust and put a hat jack in it so it won't tighten up when drying.

Some hats have, however, lost all of their stiffener and are just very floppy no matter what.

A fine looking hat, Alucard. When I come up in Art's que I'll be joining you and several others that I know of under a Sportaire. I plan to go with a granite one, but that dark most looks really good.

Some never had any; notably Borsalinos on the high end, and Tonaks on the low end. Once you start wearing a "soft" hat, it kind of spoils you.
