BOGARTS FEDORA

Villagehatshop.com has a style called the Jaxon Bogart. I have one of these and it really a darn good hat for the money. Hatsdirect.com also has a Bogart-style fedora that they offer and right now it's a little less in price than the Jaxon hat.

Thank you guys for all your kind responses/advice i know you all know your shtuff hehe, i have looked at those sites and a vintage one that has a few vintage fedora's (dont think its a bogie style) but its a toss between them, but i think since i want to also get a vintage overcoat i will probably go for a cheaper hat i know "sacrilidge" but eh i dont have a money tree growing in the back of my garden.... i have to say i am going through a bit of a hat fad and bought a 40's hat for myself, i might post a pic of it here, is this section reserved for gentlemen only or can ladies post pics?

Ladies are always welcome, but there don't seem to be enough here. On vintage fedoras you're lucky because most of them are in smaller sizes. I bought my 23 year old daughter a vintage borsalino for $20 because she has a 21" head. So, welcome. And have fun.

Plus, I think many of us would like a feminine response to how we look in our hats.

I've seen an old Resistol (if memory serves) ad that laid claim to being Bogart's favorite hat. Of course, that could've been just a licensing deal.

As you can see, there was not just one single Bogart hat, so there are many fedora options that will qualify.

"What's the difference between a Bogie and an Indiana Jones?" a hat novice recently asked me. I could have covered him in minutiae he wouldn't understand until he went stark raving mad and lept off the high rise and splattered below.

But in the interest of clean sidewalks, I simply responded, "Bogart wore Bogies, and Harrison Ford wears Indiana Joneses."

My point is that the differences are subtle, and those slight differences are overshadowed by the WAY the person wears the hat. Wearing a trench coat, dangling a filterless cigarette from the lips, and packing a .45 helps, but it's mainly a man's attitude that makes the hat work as a Bogie or not.

Basically, be it new or old, cheap of expensive, look for a hat with the following attributes:

1. Material: Made of pure fur felt, NOT wool felt (the label inside will say) with a leather sweat band and full silk or silk acetate lining, meaning that it covers all of the felt inside the crown.

2. Brim: Anywhere from 2 1/4- to 2 3/4-inch wide that "snaps," i.e., will turn up or down in both the front and rear and stay that way. The Bogie brim is of course snapped down in front, up in back.

3. Crown (the part of the hat that's not the brim): This is the most difficult part.

A. Height: It needs to be pretty tall, 5 1/2 to 6 inches as measured from the juncture at the brim to the highest point in the center of the crown when the "bash' is punched completely out into a dome. (Go ahead, that won't hurt the hat one bit.)

B. Taper (the extent to which the sides of the crown slant inward from the base towards the top): The Bogie has a slight taper, ever so slight, in contrast to the Indy, which has no taper at all, sides parallel.

C. Bash (the crease and dents in the crown): Some hats come with an open crown, meaning they are an undisturbed dome like Hoss wore in the old Western TV show Bonanza, from which you form your own bash. Some people use steam, but moistening the felt with a damp, lint-free cloth works just fine, and the rest is done entirely with your hands and fingers. However, most hats these days are pre-bashed from the factory, but even those can be relatively easily re-bashed into the shape you desire.

Either way, look at several good photos of Bogies that show it from various angles. None of the ones submitted on this thread so far show the top of the crown, but the simplest is a deep center crease right down the middle from front to rear. (There's also the "C crown," but I won't get into that here, as you can find it elsewhere on this site.) Then, form two dents on each side of the front of the crown near the top and pinch them tightly together, as shown in the photos here.

Now, you have a Bogie fedora.

Finally, there are matters of color and ribbon. All of Bogart's films were black and white, so I have no idea what color his hats were, but it appears they ranged anywhere from light gray or fawn to medium brown or dark grey. What color you get is up to you. As previously pointed out, ribbons ran the gamut from thin to very wide. Personally, I think a relatively wide, dark ribbon against a lighter felt hat body looks best, but it's your choice.

Hope this helps, and I trust I have not been so detailed as to cause you to leap from the top of Big Ben. Remember, someone will have to clean your splatter, a nasty job.

Today I bought a 1940's double breasted charcoal grey overcoat for him so i now know what colour fedora im looking at (grey with a wide contrasting ribbon, as in casablanca) hiho hiho its off shopping i go...

Can I point out that while Bogart usually has the brim down at the front and up at the back, there are times when it is different. In "The Big Sleep" he snaps the brim up at the front as part of a disguise, making him look a bit dodgy. Of course this is only a minor detail, but it shows that a Bogart hat must have a fairly flexible brim.

Also, as regards colour (I'm English, I spell it with a "u") I have seen a version of Casablanca with digitally addded colour where the hat was light grey with a black ribbon. This is good because it goes nicely with most suits and a beige trench coat.

A good hat for the money (well built, good felt, holds up to weather, attractive price) would be the Akubra Bogart.



Akubra also makes them in "carbon grey." Normally you have to special order that color, but email hatsdirect.com directly with the size you need; they may have one in carbon in stock.

High Sierra seems to be the black sheep as regards Bogart's hat. All the other hats seem to be nearly identical.

Did Bogart only wear his famous fedora on screen or did he also wear it off screen?
