Rude Once Too Often
This afternoon I was waiting in the barber shop for my favourite Barber to be free, which gave me time to read the magazines on the table, I read this Article in Time Magazine about Spam, featuring gourmet chefs recipe suggestions, thought you may like to take a peek over my shoulder.

I do remember my mother cutting it into slices and dipping it in egg with a little flour, and shallow frying it was called a "Spam Fritter" they tasted swell at the time but I'm rather scared to try them again.

And a vague memory of it cold in slices on a plate, decorated with cold mashed potatoe, piped through an icing bag, that you decorate cakes with???? with a side salad, served by a feared Aunt when I was a child

My mother grew up in Austin, MN aka the home of SPAM. The town has really tried to use the SPAM connection for marketing purposes--the SPAM museum and the SPAMjam. I've passed the SPAM museum (housed in the former home of KMart) but I've never been inside and I've purposefully avoided visiting during any SPAM related festivities. 'Bout 20 years ago my cousins dressed up like cans of SPAM for Halloween and ended up in one of Hormel's annual reports. 'Twas some of the family's pride and some of the family's shame!

Ah, Spam... The best way to make it is cut into thin slices, sprinkled with brown sugar, and baked. Not too sweet, but not too salty, and from a recipe straight outta the 40s.

I think I'll pick some up next time I'm out. It's been too long

When I was stationed on Guam during the mid-90s I was told that Guam was the highest consumer per capita of two things: Spam and Budwieser. I can believe the Spam part--I was astounded at the wide variety of Spam that was available in the local market!:eek: Spam with cheese, Low-Fat Spam, etc.

I often thought of the second one when driving home down narrow roads to my house on Friday or Saturday night! It wasn't unusual to see banners at wedding celebrations saying something like "Budwieser Congratulates John and Mary!"

I believe that distinction actually belongs to Hawaii, where both Burger King and Mickey D's offers it on their menu.

Hated by "Sad Sack" and most GIs during the Second World War. Where ever GIs were staioned the local populace loved it. It was the our gift to the world Kalishnikov gave the AK America gave SPAM. A friend of mine tells me it's served in 5 star restaurants in the Islands. Funny just the other day I " You Tubed " Monty Pythons SPAM skit, 30 years later I still get a Laugh.

Just bought some Spam, Vienna Sausages, Tuna and other emergency foods for the ice storm on the way that hopefully will not cause us to lose power. :eusa_doh: :eek:
I actually like Spam in a pea salad in the summer.
Spam is a huge staple in Hawaii to this day. Huge.

I have a friend who is Samoan but grew up in Hawaii. She says Samoans all looooove Spam because it tastes the most like "long pig" (Google it if you don't know, I didn't want to say outright in the forum). I hope she was kidding. I think she was.
Anyway, she says that is why it is so popular.
