That hat is post-1944, which is when Dobbs started stamping the sweatbands with "Guilded Edge" (their name for the Cavanagh Edge).

Cheers!

I love it when somebody chimes in about dates like this. Thank you very much, thunderw21! Now I know the earliest year this hat could've been manufactured in. Anybody know when Dobbs stopped using the Guild Edge distinction?

Most likely 1972, when Hat Corporation of America closed their factories and sold the rights to Koracorp. The "Guild Edge" trademark didn't pass on to Koracorp, as they never renewed it.

Fantastic hat, by the way! I say its from the '40s.

Yes, a nice hat indeed. It's good to see such a lid find its way to a person who appreciates what makes it special.

If you don't mind saying, dumbjaw, how much did that clean and block and resizing set you back? Looks like they reused the ribbon. How 'bout the sweatband? And did those stains on the right side of the crown come out?

That's a timeless beauty. If they did get out the stains, as previously asked, do you know how? I had heard of using sandpaper as well...and wondering about this one.

Sir, they did an outstanding job on that hat. It is a very warm color and I can only imagine how nice it looks in use.

The ribbon, sweatband, and liner are all the same. The stains are still there, but you can see a faint marking as if they had tried to sandpaper them out somehow. The scuffs will go away over time. The total cost for the clean / reblock / stretch was $8.00. Yes, seriously. I never knew Oscar at South Street Hats did this, but now that I know, it's where ALL of my hats will go, especially since it's within walking distance of my apartment. Now, I don't know how thorough the work is when it's done, but I don't get the impression that it's Optimo-level - I don't think the ribbon or sweat or liner were removed at all during the process.

Good news it only cost USD8 but you had to brave snow, sleet and the Philly elements:eek: to get there right? To think that city was the original capital of the USA.[huh]

I didn't really have to brave much at all. A two block walk east and a six block walk north and I'm standing out from of South Street Hats.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I love Philadelphia like a brother and could never imagine living anywhere else.

I really hope an Indy fan doesn't win it and cut off the Guild Edge.

I think this is the first time a Fedora Lounge post made me laugh out loud.

Awesome reply.
