Well, IIRC, G.I. Joe has always been a character himself within the fantasy world. Taking that name and making it an acronym was a bad, bad choice which that public statement didn't even address.

It seems to me that they are likely to face a backlash over this in the US (Fox News are certainly intent on whipping it up from what I've seen), though maybe that's a generational thing if what they're donig reflects what kids who grew up in the 80s are familiar with, and they are going to be the target audience, really.

They are doing it for the market power of the brand, completely changing its definition. [huh] Capitalism at its best. Everything that seems to be solely American Government or American Military is taboo. This is to make the move more internationally digestible, thus its suckage factor will go through the roof.

I think Ill watch all the cartoons on DVD and skip this 'remake' altogether.

Go team! :eusa_doh: Gooo JOE!

Message to G.I Joe Fans
Hasbro’s G.I. Joe Team wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts regarding the G.I. Joe live-action movie that we are developing with Paramount Pictures.

..The second generation, was created in 1982, and is based on a cast of fictional heroes and villains that make up the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” fantasy. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their “fight for freedom wherever there is trouble” against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series.

This movie will be a modern telling of the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pit” as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm. Without all of you, the brand would not be where it is today.

Thank you.

I read this and suddenly think.. what are we all so upset about? lol
The G.I. Joe of history is long gone!

Not quite, there was a limited-run series of GI Joe-branded historical soldier figures. (yes, in proper 12" size!lol) Don't know if it's still going or not...

See, even some of us '80s kids (using the term very loosely in my case) get it!lol And don't even get me started about that other recent big "toy movie"...

What do you mean!? We always get upset when the hollywood macheen tampers with our fuzzy nostalgia of fun but campy 80s cartoons of yesteryear. I mean Bumblebee was a camaro for pets sake! lol

*the article in the first post was good. Now a move about that would be awesome!

Don't forget about the flames on Optimus. They've been compared to those nipples on the batman costume.... one of those "What the hell were they thinking?" sort of things.

I always found it interesting how kids shows got renamed in the UK, like how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

What was wrong with "Ninja?"

That was something to do with the fact that at the time there was a thriving underground scene interested in ninja weaponry. Much of this was illegal in the UK but being slipped in via private international purchases even in those long pre-internet days. The memory of the early 80s video nasties panic was still fresh when the turtles officially arrived in the UK in 1990, and the foreshadowings of the early 90s "screen violence causes actual violence" panic were already there. This led to the cartoon being renamed - as well as heavily cut. For the UK version, not only was the name altered, but any actual use of the weapons to do much more than cut pizza was razored out - nothing more than a fist was ever seen to be used against an enemy. All use of the word "bummer" was also cut from UK screens, if memory serves.

There had better be somebody my age humming the 80's theme song out there - where the chorus goes "...a REAL AMERICAN HERO..." That's what I remember from the 80's. Just as previous incarnations were American soldiers and Marines, so were the Joes of my era. A real American hero. If they're playing offa the 80's nostalgia, everyone knows "He'll fight for freedom wherever there's trouble, GI Joe is there...GI Joe - A REAL AMERICAN HERO..." If they eff with that, there had better be some stink, and not just because I'm a flag waver for the sake of it. Because it will be an indication to all the world that Americans have no self worth or sense of national pride or identity. That we've become a nation of apologists. At least that will be the perception, and rightfully so. Repulsive. I swear I will picket:rage:

All right guys 'fess up how many of you 50+ guys had THE GI Joe "Action figure". The ones that had the painted not "Life like hair". He later on had the "kung Fu Grip" Eddie Murphy always talked about. He got pretty cool there for a while. There was the "Kraut", "Limey" an Aussie one with a cool "Digger". Every kid I knew had one and proudly brought them to school for "Show and Tell". I always see them at Gun Shows for some outrageous prices. Just to think we used to burn, behead and shoot them with our BB Guns !

They seem to have styled this GI Joe remake on the popular 'Metal Gear Solid' computer Games...
