Well Nivea does the trick. I use to have burns and cuts when i was shaving without. My skin is really sensitive and nivea help creating a "greasy" surface between the skin and the blade. Cheap and helpfull.

I just tried Nivea cream before shaving too - it's really a lot smoother! After you apply the cream, how long do you wait before applying the lather, and do you rinse your face with hot water before doing so?

I've already used Nivea cream after applying the ASB, which also helps to keep the skin irritation-free

A word of warning people; both my sister and I are quite allergic to something that seems to be in most Nivea products. YYMV offcourse, but even though the product may say "mild" or "sensitive" on the label, it may still be quite harsh on your skin. I would much rather recommend the Proraso products, they may cost a bit more and be harder to find - but they are overall better and healthier products to use.

Here in the US you can get a skin product that is not supposed to cause any allergic reations and be quite soothing for the post shave time called CETAPHIL. It was once a prescription item but is now an over the counter item.

Broke out a WW2 Gillette Tech today and tried it out. Very easy to see why Gillette made thgem for several decades.

My shave consists of a Merkur/Solinger DE long handle for the scalp (in the shower), then using a silver tip badger & a Theirs Assard Singing Blade sharpened on a Dovo strop, 1 pass WTG, 1 pass ATG, 1 pass XTG. Then the riveting sensation of either Ed. Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum or the Classic After Shave. Generally a couple shots of El Rey Soleil Cologne with the classic & a similar musk with the bay rum.

Well, after the shower, i put some nivea cream on the sensitives parts of my growing beard, not too much but enough to have my skin looking white like a fresh cadaver. I take the time to gently prepare my lather and blade (2, 3, 4 minutes...) and then I directly lather on my face without washing out the cream. Each pass will take out some cream with the hair and you'll finish with a real good BBS.
In fact, yes it works like Proraso cream or any type of greasy / hydratation cream. You can also use oil (jojoba), but I really prefer cream.
BTW, I heard that Proraso were really easy to find in Northern America, especially Canada. Is that right ? I'm going to move to Quebec in 3 mounth.

As I have really dry skin, especially on my upper lip and on the sides of the nose I tried many brands of cream, but it only got better since I'm using the classic Nivea cream. I thought about trying the Proraso pre/post too, and maybe will soon, but the blue Nivea metal tin gives me this kind of vintage feel, as it's what my grandparents used since I can remember

That's enough reason for me to do it...WWII tech with my old helmet for a basin!

Yes, Proraso is readily available, it's also available in re-branded form at Bath and Body Works stores as C.O. Bigleow Shaving Cream. While in Canada, look for J.M Fraser's shave cream. I get great shaves with it, and from my understanding the big 450 ml tub is somewhere around $10 CAN. A real bargain IMHO.

Tonight :

PREP : hot shower, nivea cream

SHAVE : Merkur Progress, Merkur blade first use, Proraso cream from the tube, pure badger brush

Four passes : 2 WTG / 1 XTG / 1 ATG (that was a mistake...) + Buffing in the neck (I like mistakes tonight)

POST : Alum Block / Weleda ASB

Result : Two mistakes means confortable shave, near BBS, but with a little burn in the neck (I felt too confident and too concentrated on my pork chops' shape). But one night of sleep will fix all that.

Same as always, so my shave of the day posts could get quite boring

Just wanted to note that I tried the Nivea creme before shaving but it doesn't seem to work for me. It somehow makes my lather disappear and decreases the gliding of the razor[huh] ..so at least for me, no Nivea as pre-shave.
