Hmm this looks exciting, i really enjoyed road to perdition and film noir in genera, although i didn't like the Untouchables(with the exception of the white suited Nitti, portrayed by one of my favorites, billy drago) . Infact i got this name from Jude Law's character in Road to Perdition.

Fedora hats a plenty in new "Public Enemies" Trailer

The trailer for "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale directed by Michael Mann just came out and it sure looks exciting. The trailer features an impressive amount of sharp-looking hats. The plot according to imdb.com is as follows: The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s. Bale is Melvin Purvis and Depp is John Dillinger.

Here is a link to the trailer to view in Quicktime:

What do you think? Should we play a game of "Identify that hat?"

Is that a cav edge? Or just welted to make it look like a cav? The way the shadow falls inside the brim next to the bow makes me think of that..

Or it could be the snap of the brim...

I guess he would have enough money to buy a cav edge...

Music is disappointing as well as the choice to film it with an HD Digital Camera as opposed to 35mm

Looks too clean and sharp with a definite lack of dynamic range in the image.

Depp's hat is awesome. The proportions on his hat are so perfect.

Guesses on the hat's proportions? I was thinking the crown might be close to 5 inches, with a brim of no more than 2 1/4... maybe just 2.

I agree with all of your assessments. I just hope the trailer music is not the direction they will go with for the movie. My guess is that they are looking for the young crowd who will buy the "Music Inspired by Public Enemies" soundtrack and feature all rappers and hiphopsters who say they are "gangsta." Also, the music is the last part of the movie done and what is used in the trailer is usually from other sources.

i do like the way he has to grab a hat and adjust the brim 'just so' while breaking out of prison..... :)

We should all practice putting on our fedoras that way.

Like the others here, I hope the music in the trailer is not what they end up using. I highly doubt they will use it, but then, you never know. Still, I'm looking forward to this movie's release.

A word on the wearing of hats

Look closely at the trailer and you'll see that in this movie, there is only one way to wear a hat - iconically.
Dead center, T-square level, low on the brow, stiff as a recruiting-poster Marine or a Clint Eastwood cowboy.

That is about as un-1930s as it gets. No snap, no panache, no naturalness. Simple hard imagery.

Even Johnny Depp, civilian, wears his hat with more élan than that.

As for Dillinger himself, he couldn't so much as spit without élan.

I have to say, I concur with Fletch. The aspect of hats in this (and other) modern movies depicting the Golden era differ from what you usually see in period movies... They look too new and perfect.

Of course, this is because they are new and perfect. ;) But some distressing would be in order.

The style and panaché in wearing them are another thing altogether. You either have it or not I guess.
