John from Covina you of all people should know better. I know you're a loyal supporter of the "Beer Nazi.". (Sam at the Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel, CA.) It's the same situation exactly. Sam has an excellent establishment and is a very salty character. He won't sugarcoat his opinions on anything. But what the heck do we care? The bottom line is that the beer and the grub are great! Sam loves to cook and loves good drink. Stuart at LW loves to make jackets and does a fine job! If you want free psychiatric care go somewhere else.....or maybe learn a lesson in compassion by respecting someone else's opinon even if it's not the same as yours.

I have never heard Sam attack anyone in the manner as quoted above as some type of mission statement.

I believe that people should have opinions and that they can be advanced in a manner of clarity. Denegrating others as hurtful weapons design to crush the opposion and what they say is not discussion of opinion. If someone is wrong, you have the right to correct them, bring evidence to say what you are saying is not correct or not correct all of the time.

Go to Sam's and ask for a Bud, if he thinks you are open to learning he'll chide and guide you to other beers to grow your knowledge and taste buds.
He won't call you a crossdresser or a shill if you discuss a beer he doesn't have. If you should get a beer that is not in good condition and bring it to his attention, you won't be denegrated as an ignoramus spouting blasphemy and attempting to destroy his business.

If you want to hear the choice stuff ask for a COORS. But in general his grousing is good natured teasing not meant to be hurtful or spiteful and there is a difference.

I see humor in Stu's screed, but it's dark humor. There's something very hard and unforgiving behind it - something that wants us to be a little harder and less forgiving, because it will make us lasting and reliable and real. Something that wants the best for us in a very important, but very narrow and limited way, and doesn't care what we go thru, or what we lose, getting there.
Yes it is a dark humour but it doesn't seem that terrible when you read it on the actual LW site. I kind of got the feeling that he just gets a bit carried away and that he cares alot to the point of obsessiveness about his jackets. That's ok if they're really good. I don't own one. I was thinking of saving up to get one from Goodwear since they seem to be really the most authentic. But are LW jackets as good as or better than those? If so, I'll save for one and smile at his dark humour.

children dressing as adults?
what's wrong with that exactly? I don't believe a child should be forced to wear adult clothes but some do, when I was eight for my birthday I asked for a suit which matched my father's because I was quite enamored of him.

The humour I saw in his writing was, I am sure, unintentional. He is guilty of the very things he rails against, a bit silly really.

About the "crazy NY" vibe - which is something I have wide experience with. NY is a good place to learn excellence, especially if you care about nothing else. Excellence, traditionally, is uncompromising - it can encourage you to be uncompromising about other things, too, and about people. Juilliard and Wall Street waste a lot of talent; it's part of their system. New York too, really - once you fail or leave, there's nowhere to go but down.

I have lived in NYC for over 40 years, and while there are some great things here, I would move to Scotland, Japan or 1,000 other places tomorrow.

There are many people just as smart, talented, and capable outside of the big apple as here, they just got smart about putting up with the high tax rates that dimwits like Bloomberg have foisted on people ;)

and??

Not being a particular fanatic about A-2's, and only ever buying vintage and not repro, I found this site quite amusing: the guy wants to project an image, which seems to be somewhere between Ted Nugent and John Milius, and I was laughing out loud at some of it, but if he does what he says he does and the jackets are as good as he reckons, then he can pitch it however he likes and you can vote with your bucks..ain't that the American way?

A high degree of specific knowledge about clothing and culture -- books, movies, music, furniture, architecture, the whole nine yards -- is necessary to escape the tunnel vision of the hobbyist, who has little learning and less comprehension since he obsesses on the little he thinks he knows as a security blanket, in denial of the big, adult world he fears -- the "trekkie" mentality. Ecce nerd.
Hilarious and yet these ramblings seem to border on personality disorder.

People are free to choose to support Lost Worlds or not. [huh]

Authentic A-2's

A-2 makers are like barbers (excluding Sweeney Todd), you have to find one that naturally cuts they way you like it because it's impossible to get them to change their style. You would probably better off with Goodwear given the generally accepted notion of A-2 authenticity. Stuart has a very square cut shoulder profile that I like. I have one in brown goat that fits perfectly but is a far cry from the look of Eastman or Goodwear. I even have a black deerskin (!!) A-2 from LW. Literary website criticism aside, a characteristic that differentiates one jacket maker from another is choice of hides. Stuart's goat and deer are not something you'll find with the other accepted masters of the genre. He even has elk, but I've yet to see that. Aside from A-2's, he has some truly better than the original motorcycle jackets. These are cut exactly like the vintage editions but the horsehide is incredible. Not stiff, just great looking and utilitarian. If you check out this Buco and scroll down he's even inventive enough to produce it in Ballistic Nylon. A personal favorite that the pictures don't do justice. It's has an interesting sheen and is surprisingly heavy duty. http://www.lostworldsinc.com/Buco_Leather_Motorcycle_Jacket_J23.htm

Thanks Elmonteman. Looking at the LW site, it looks to me as if the guy makes some excellent stuff. Basically I don't really mind or care about his eccentricities. I just wouldn't take it personally. I really like the look of his A-1 jackets.

Going by your avatar stephen1965, you might be a person who is comfortable with eccentrics................:)

Well sometimes, I guess, people who wish to create special things can come across as unusual. No point letting negative emotions get in the way of a good jacket. I'm sure my avatar Georges Gurdjieff would agree. His whole system of living was most practical..unless of course you consider him a charlatan.

Hmmm

As a retailer, resaler, vendor and manufacturer (nothing vintage) i have developed a certain charm. Some people get it,some people dont.
I try to give good advice when i can, even use a bit of potty mouth when not required but this LW bloke comes across as a tool.

This makes sense. Why would you ever start making something as insanely subtle as A-2s unless you believed there was one, and only one, right way?

You would probably better off with Goodwear given the generally accepted notion of A-2 authenticity.
John Chapman is an exception to my rule above. There's always one.
