Akubra CEO vs. Fed IV Deluxe

Someone had been asking about a comparison between these two in terms of taper and shape. Just received my CEO in green today. great hat. the curvature in the brim is VERY pronounced. one of the pics below shows it next to my akubra coolabah in tawny...these two hats are surprisingly similar in overall shape. of course the CEO does not have the ventilation holes and has a bound brim. the quality is very nice though and the felt has a nice hand.
Next to the fed in moonstone you can see that there is much more of a taper, both front to back and on the sides. but the crown height is about the same as where i have the fed bashed. anyway, hope these help.

Definitely doesn't snap up but I'm sure with a bit of steam you could make a go of it. I just got a message back from Hats Direct confirming that the CEO block is the same as the coolabah so that gives you an idea. The hat is shaped around more of an outback shape but for some reason it works nicely in dress form.....go figure!

Hey MacFly...
I recall asking that question...about the taper. Perhaps someone else did as well.
Nonetheless...thank you.

My need now is to find a hat to wear with a suit. I wear grey, black, and dark blue suits. Have a Casual in Carbon, Sydney in Charcoal, Federation IV in Dark Brown, and a Hampton in black that just doesn't work for me.

Maybe a Bogart or a Moonstone Federation...but I am really liking that CEO in green.

no problem. Im a visual type so I know how it helps!
I'll tell ya...the green was kind of a whim for me but it is really the perfect color. a great winter/fall hat but will probably look great all year round. its a very classy muted forrest green that could be worn with almost anything. kahki, brown, even blue and grey suits look great with it. its not a flashy, in your face pimp green so it blends nicely. the bound brim really dresses it up although you can definitely wear it with jeans too. I was checking it out today and with some steam you could easily shape the rear brim up and it would look really sweet. at this point these hats are so cheap its almost too easy to just keep buying them....
glad I could be of help.
by the way, the first pic captures the green color almost perfectly.

Here I sit, as I'm goofing with my Sydney, trying to convince myself why I shouldn't get that CEO fern...

Maybe I should get the grey Bogart instead?
Maybe the CEO taper won't work for me?
Maybe the fern won't work for me?
Maybe I should take up coin collecting?
Maybe I should buy food instead of another hat?

But I keep looking at the thread of green lids and searched for this thread to find the pic of the CEO fern.

Beginning to think my wife is right about me regarding my hats, I have "OCD on my head".
Admission is the first step towards recovery, so I'm told.

The taper of a CEO doesn't have the same effect as the taper of--say--a Stetson Temple. The CEO is a full 5" tall on the sides in creased form. The extra inch of height spreads out the taper, and you don't end up looking like a bullet-head.

CEOs rock. The downturned brim enables you to have a hat with a moderate brim width (2-3/4") that protects your eyes and face from low sun angle like a much broader brimmed hat. You can wear them with anything. If there's any brimmed fur felt hat you could wear with cargo shorts, it would be a safari hat. Just add a pugaree.

For the record, I have two Fed IVs, a DM Adventurer, and a cruiser grey CEO, so I know what I'm talking about.

Thanks MacFly and JohnnyB53...

CEO fern has been ordered.
Asked Jenny at Hats Direct if they had 'em in stock. She replied affirmatively. Added that "everyone needs a green hat".
Told her that I heard the same thing in the Army

I have a really newbi question: what's taper? Is it like brim bounding or the stiffness of the hat or whatever? I have no idea.

Also, Goose, how did you get the crown on the Fed IV that low? Mine seems to be really high.

When you look at your crown from the front, if it looks like a "stovepipe" straight on the sides then there is no taper. If it leans in creating a slight point effect then there is taper.:)

Hi Johnny...

Indy Cop did and excellent job describing "taper". So, to answer your second question about the low crown on my Fed...

When I first received it, did somewhat of a center dent to start the work by putting it on my head to where the crown of the hat was touching the top of my noggin.

I then started to work the edges of that dent. Raised it a bit in the front. The "excess" became gave the telescope. For point of reference, the inside of the edge is 1" from bottom to top.

Don't know if that makes sense. PM me if you have any questions and I'll help as much as I can :)

Post number 9 of this thread shows the bash better:

Hey goose...why arent you warming up to the CEO? is it the taper you dont like or something else? maybe curling the rear brim up would help. i like the outback style of it with the fairly pronounced front and rear brim curvature but you seem to like that non tapered Fed look better.

Is the taper Badenov for you?

I seriously considered ordering the green CEO over the Silverbelly Campdraft, which is on backorder...that green is fantastic, Goose. But images of the CEO's taper on several threads on FL convinced me otherwise. I started wearing hats with a modern Stetson Saxon, which has a pretty good taper:

But the more I've worn my Fed IV and my Johnnyphi Adam open crown, the more I'm uncomfortable with the taper. In fact, when it comes to the taper, I can't get an image out of my mind:
Boris.jpg

Pronounced taper, center dent...maybe this is why I don't own a black hat.

So, Goose, is it the taper? Or is something else keeping you from warming up to the CEO?

Johnny,
taper is how parallel the sides of the hat are when looking at it straight on. looking at the fed you have there shows that the sides dont converge if you were to draw an imaginary line from the brim to the crown on each side and keep it going up. the earlier they start to come together at the top , the more taper they are considered to have. imagine hats shaped like the letter 'A' and ' H ' the A hat would have a lot of taper and the H, none. sometimes those H hats are called stove pipe or chimney types since they are parallel like their namesakes.

Great explanation, Macfly!

Johnny, your Fed is definitely an H hat, not an A--not tapered into an A like the photo of my Stetson Saxon (or Boris Badenov's hat) above. Compare my Stetson photo with the photo of my Fed in my avatar and you'll see the difference. My Stetson is definitely an A hat, my Fed is an H hat.
