A2's advice needed.

Please can anyone help me, as I'm looking to buy my first A2.I'm 5'7" ,with a 40.5" chest ,32" inch waist and weigh 11.5 stone. I have searched the forum for the last 4 months (and VJL) and I really love the look of the ELC Star (Paddys photo's in the havanna brown thread looks amazing)and the ELC Werber but was wondering if anyone owns both styles and could give advice on which is there favourite and why.Also how different are the cuts.
Any advice would be greatly received.

Can’t comment on the Star as I don’t own one. But here is my Werber in a 40.



I am 5’9” also about 40.5” chest and waist 34” (was also 32” waist only a couple of months ago!!)

Quite a light weight horsehide which is perfect for the summer months. I like the extra top stitching on the sleeves, cuffs and hem. The ‘hookless zip’ is nice although it took a bit of getting used to.

My only criticism is the epaulets which are on the long side and without the extra box stitching at the neck end (as the original I believe) they can bunch up a little. But a great jacket.

+1 on James' Werber post above. The jacket fits well - not overly tight. The Star probably has a much lower collar due to the lack of collar stand; whereas the Werber has a high collar. I have a fairly long neck so the Werber works well for me.

Just my 2 cents worth.

James as the same size chest as me would you say that the werber allows for plenty of movement. The only reason I ask is that Gary Eastman emailed me to say that with my size chest that if I was over 11.5 stone I might need a 42.By the way its looks a cracking fit and style.

I just picked up my first...

I don't know if this will help but I bought a vintage Cooper A2 from a member on here, it's my first & I dig it ... but I do have my gripes about it ... since it is authentic it only has two cargo pockets, that you really can't use for anything with bulk, because it would ruin the cut of the jacket .. any shirts that you wear underneath has to be tucked in or it would look odd with the jacket on, including tee shirts .. the good things outweigh the bad though .. this jacket is a 50L & I wear a 48R but it fits perfectly .. when it's a little nippy out I can fit a fleece vest under it with the ends sticking out of the bottom and it would still look sharp .. looks great paired with jeans or tan cargo pants [needed the extra pockets] plus looks styling with my wide brim tan fedora .. the best part is that I got it for under $100.00 FedEx shipped :D

I weigh just over 11 ½ stone myself and personally I would not want a 42 in this jacket. I think it would look ok but not really the fit I would want in this style.
But if you intend wearing a jumper or layers then it may suit you to order a 42. I only wear mine in the summer with just a shirt.

I know its hassle but I’m sure you will be able to exchange it if you do not like the fit.

Let us know what you decide.

Great fit on the Werber. That is the way an A2 of that vintage (1930s) should fit. Hey what type of cigar you got? Goes well with the jacket.

Don't worry about turning 40 it is 50 that sucks. Based on your size I would suggest a 42 in ELC jackets. You might be able to get into a 40 but the Werber runs a bit snug. The Star (I had one) is a bit bigger. So you probably could take a 40 in the Star and a 42 in the Werber.

Thanks for the advice Greyhound 68.May I ask ,did your star have long arms in proportion to the rest of the jacket,as I have read in other articles.Thanks and Happy Easter.
PS do you have any pictures?

If I recall on the arms (since I no longer have the jacket) it ran about 25 inches from the shoulder to the end of the knit cuff. This is about prefect for me. Sorry no pictures.

Thanks for the information greyhound68 and James.I am thinking more towards the Werber in a size 40 (like the idea of a slimmer cut before middle age spread really gets a grip).Will leave it till after the weekend before I take the plunge, (just in case someone decides to posts some awesome pictures of a Star and change my mind again;) )
