The reason? Flecked newsboy caps (with bucked strap!) from the 1920s and '30s are desired by the Japanese and are very, very rare -- and rarer still in such fine condition -- and rarest of all in a large size. Hence the price.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Before the recession, caps just like this one sometimes went for about $600 on eBay. That's right: six smackers.

Remember, too, that no retail makers of caps today have succeeded in accurately reproducing the silhouette of the old ones.

Flecked 1930s Cap

For the newsboy archive...the cloth is almost early atomic...

Marc ..the hidden buckle tightener treatment is very clever design wise ...this is how they tightened the cap so as not to do it at back where it would look ugly...very smooth and streamlined...

I wish they still made them like that. Why don't they? I don't like the poofy look, although I am pleased with my cheap navy blue capas cap, it's the closest to vintage I've seen flop wise.

What Ho chaps,
I am sorely tempted to get a tweed cap from Bookster, but I have a couple of questions:
Firstly, do these caps (I am thinking of going with the Gloucester model) suit rotund gentlemen such as myself? Various ladies of my acquaintance have expressed somewhat harsh views towards my suitability for donning a cap*.
Second, when sizing, does one go with ones usual hat size, or reduce it slightly to sit higher on the head? I had assumed that the cap sits higher naturally, but I should like to be sure. Are Bookster caps adjustable?

*Dark whispers about overweight schoolboys and such things.

Hello LordB,

I do not see problems in a portly gentleman as you are sporting one of these caps, although your physique would easily support the larger version of the Gloucester, too. Of course, it is a matter of taste. I would ask Bookster about crown measurements, in order to have enough elements of judgement.

Bookster caps have no adjustment devices. I went with my regular size, and they came fine. Again, it depends on your preferences: if you like to wear caps higher, then you should account for it when stating sizes.

Cheap they may be, but they look good. Is that the regular crown size? I think they have the regular and one they call "Apple cap". The former goes by sizes, the latter is One Size fits Most.

My summer entries are two linen caps. The gray one has a fold line from sloppy packing, so it isn't sitting right. Yet. I'l fix it soon.

They has Capas tags, but were in Kangol bags. Is Capas a division of Kangol?

Nice caps. I am a little put off by these "collage" or "patchwork" caps - they look like hard to combine with the rest of clothing, with so many patterns going on. I guess the solution is to use solid colours, in harmony with the main theme in the cap, from the neck down.

Do they have leather bills? And, you got them from where?

I felt very unsure about the patchwork caps, too, Torpedo. I would not do it with a winter cap, but I thought that it might work for casual summer clothes (polo shirts, t-shirts, jeans). A touch of color without going with anything bright.

I admit, I'm still not positive about the black/grey cap. I'll have to see how it looks in "the real world."

The bills feel like stiff cardboard or maybe plastic, with fabric covering them. And they came from Hatsplus.com

I really like those. I think my Capas caps wear well and are of good quality. The blue one's snap broke off when I was messing with it, but I applied some krazy glue and stuck it back on. They seem to be stitched together well and I think they look good and floppy. I don't know much at all about the brand, however.

I love those flecked caps, have one from J. Peterman, deep blue with flecks of many other colors. And I just ordered that pretty light blue wool flecked cap that is on the Hat People site.

Can hardly wait to receive it.

I really like those hats! I was just about to ask has anybody tried Hatsplus. I was looking at the brown one in the first picture and the linen newboy on the site. How do you feel about the quality and fit? I think the one in you first picture is my kind of cap.

I like Hats Plus. I've gotten numerous hats from them. They happen to carry the sort of summer stuff I like, and their service is great. Very friendly on the phone and by e-mail.

I bought an Extra Large which is supposed to be a 7 1/2 to 7 5/8. It would not fit a 7 5/8. So I guess they run a tad small. Quality seems ok, but as Cowboy points out, the snap is a bit dodgey on this brand. I wouldn't play with it much.
Just remember, with a patch cap, patterns may vary.
