I actually think that the haircut described in: http://www.dererstezug.com/GermanHaircut.htm

would look good on me. And im rather keen on getting my hair cut this way.

Though I would like to pose a question to forum members.

Im a 21 year old white male currently attending a university in hartford CT/USA. If you were to see someone on the street with such a haircut, would you immediately think Nazi?

I dont want to have a hard time with students/professors/part-time job with people thinking im some sort of white-supremest or Nazi.

Thanks :)

No. Most people haven't the slightest what a Nazi haircut would look like, and if they do, then they're probably a buff on the subject and woul know what you're going for anyway.

Don't be afraid of German memorobilia just because of a shady period in history - I have German clothing, sunglasses, whatever, and never have I once been identified as a Nazi - I can guarantee you that.

It's pretty much the swastika and other military markings you need to look out for.
Remember - Hitler is bad, not Germany.

Here's some pics of Clooney from his Leatherheads shoot. I think he put a little more effort into the look for the film.

Also, not sure if perhaps I even got this picture from this thread in the first place...but I dug it up, very, very cool.

My friend Morgan prefers a flat top buzz and has been going to Andy's for years.
This February Andy's sold to one of the barbers and is now Sweeny Todd's.
I asked him where it was.
It reminded me of the first barbershop I'd been to as a youth.
I pointed to a vintage barber chart and product advertisment card (the black, gold
& red one in background), haltingly stammered something about "pre-war"
and was happy with what he called a "Banker's Cut".
Self portrait to follow later. Todd is a more cheerfull fellow than pictured
here with razor, this day the A/C was out AND his awning had
just been vandalized with street gang placa spray paint.
I may just become a regular customer.

Todd is the Only barber that I let cut my hair. He does a great job. Befor him, My mother (who is a hair stylist of 30+ years) was the only other person to cut my hair.

Hello out there

Some very nices cuts around here.
I'm going to move from France to Canada (Quebec City) in the months to come. Too bad, i've found the perfect hairdresser, here in France. I wear some kind of WWII cut, long on the top and very short and the back and sides, slicked with pomade.
Anybody know a good old school male hairdresser in Quebec ? I know Dinnerman is from Nova Scotia, but I can't see myself rent a car every 3 weeks to have my hair cut in the same place like him...BTW, i know that lots of pomades can be found in the US at the wallmart or so. Is that as easy in Canada ?

Regards from France, Bert.

I've stopped using Royal Crown, opting for the less greasy Groom & Clean.

I strongly recommend, for those who desire some taming of their locks and the sense that there's some product there but NOT a greasy look, a conditioning styling cream called Smoothe from a chain of upscale-ish barber shops in NYC and Chicago called John Allan's.

I watch a lot of old movies, and in thirties and forties pictures, there are many men whose hair is well-kept and tidy and obviously has a grooming agent in it, but it is NOT overly shiny or slick.

I have often wondered what they used. I don't know the answer, but I do know that Smoothe does the trick for me. I have dry, semi-frizzy hair, but this product makes it look great (and it remains very touchable -- no greasy kid stuff here).

I've recommended it here in the Lounge before and I don't know if anyone's taken the leap based on my recommendation, but I use it every day. Love the stuff. It's not dirt cheap, but the four-ounce bottle will last you longer than you would think. It takes very little of the stuff to do the trick.

Because I don't wash my hair every day (it gets way too dry that way), the effect of the Smoothe is a bit cumulative for me, but it works fine on those days that I do shampoo, too (though I might use a bit more of the stuff on those days).

You can find it here:

JohnAllens.com

It also holds well enough, without being stiff or slick, to make my hair hold up just fine under a hat.

Mineral Oil has been good now and again, yet lately I've been heading for more hold and when it comes to the lighter pomades I've been sticking with Murray's Super Light. I usually have to order it from the site sine it's not one that regularly gets carried by drugstores. It doesn't have the scent of Royal Crown and it doesn't have the heavy density of regular Murray's which is too waxy for my liking and leaves your hair dull colored and hard to manage.

Anywho... in regards to waves, I sport them sometimes though like the shaggy look as of late. I've been asked again about how they are done easily and I'll put a video up soon. Not too hard.

Rude Once Too Often
Diner man, I think the top is too long and doesn't blend in with the sides,It not quite an "under cut" but it heading that way, I think you need to ask for a College Cut, I don't want to sound rude but its a bit Haircut 100. it looks good but its kinda 80's ( unless that is what you want?)

If it has balanced layers through the top and balanced graduation at the sides you can create heaps of looks

Interesting one...

*Because...* I actually think the shaved look makes 'you' look a lot younger!! It's actually taken years off you (or maybe the 2003 one put years on you [huh] ). Not sure how that works, but you suit that shaved look, and I'm aware from other postings in the past, that it's a myth that fellas with little hair have no appeal to the ladies. In fact...quite the reverse my friend!!
You're looking sharp!!

*sigh* I envy you all.

It seems that for every pound of weight I've lost since high school, a significant portion of hair has gone with it.

FOR INAPPPROPRIATE

Remember, Errol Flynn's hair was styled by the best at Warner Bros. so if you want that kind of a cut your going to have to find a stylist and pay the big bucks - at least for the first cut. A good, honest stylist will tell you if your hair can be cut the way you want. You may not have the right type of hair - too thin or too whatever. If you do get your cut try ALBERTO VO5. Use after you towel dry your hair. It holds very well without the plastered down greasy look and has a lot of luster. Good luck.

Well it looked good in person and matched nearly exactly some '30s photos I showed the barber.

Up until July 4, 1995, I had very long hair, in a ponytail. Out of the ponytail, it's texture and consistency has been described in NY as a 'jewfro.'

At a party on the above mentioned date, about 8 of us, one after another, went under a Wahl out in the garage to the cheering and laughter of the entire party's not-too-sober populace. I went from a ponytail half way down my back to a whole-head #2 buzz. It was wild.

The next day, when I could eventually see again, I began to examine my new head in the mirror and was somewhat startled to see that I was indeed quite thin on top. This had been well disguised by the long hair pulled back into said tail every day.

Almost immediately after that, I went out and bought my own Wahl kit with clip on attachments. I have not been to a haircutter since.

For the last few years, I have experimented with the #2, 1, and no attachments. Several months ago, I decided to try to emulate a picture I had seen many years ago of a man, probably taken the 1940s, with a full head of hair and drastically short sides. Well, I wanted the drastically short sides, anyway. :)

I also figured that since the top of my head was getting thinner anyway, that I'd try to draw some attention away from it by buzzing it all down with no attachments, and then completely shaving the sides the width of my Norelco completely around my ears where they attach to my head (my apologies for borrowing that from the 'how high should my hat sit on my head' thread).

At any rate, I really like the results and have been wearing it that way for months. I do the buzzing weekily and the shaving daily. I think now I'm going to try to shave the back up a little higher to try to achieve more of that vintage look I love, given my follicle limitations.

got a link for this Kent hairbrush??

Will they ship to the US? Looks like what you see Fred Astaire using in one of his movies.

Well I didn't get one during the holidays but was lucky enough to have someone buy one when they were in England.

The bristles are very stiff and really massage the scalp. These are some of the finest brushes in the world. The small leaflet enclosed says, "Used and cared for properly, a Kent hairbrush will care for your hair indefinitely."

This is an extremely nice brush.

Cheers,
Pyro.

our son's haircut, a Fred Astaire wannabe...

The time when DH and our 12-3/4yo son went to the barber in prep for the Art Deco Yosemite weekend- they took in a 1930s pic of Fred Astaire with no hat on, shot in profile. Here's a pic of young Daniel taken at the event with his hair cut short ala' Fred with pomade in it (but is yucky to try to remove later). He was wearing the DB tux for the black tie Gala Dinner in the Awhawnee Hotel.

Daniel likes his hair done this way, and has often had Dad help him pomade it for school (he's in seventh grade), and other dress up events we go to.

to Matt- difference between...

Can yo please let us know the difference between Brilliantine such as Three Flowers for example, a wax pomade, and the Murray Super Light.

The pomade DH and DS currently use they found out here was a La bella sport WAX Pomade that smells like pineapple!

I'm supposed to get my hair cut tomorrow, going for a new job at the factory,so I want to look my best. It'll be the same cut I've got since I was 10, I'm 18 now.

Thought I'd mention...

I've been using AC Fibre for years now and I've just swapped to this. It's sensational. Good hold with a slight wet look. As a Swing dancer I need the hold and like my fringe (bangs) and top long. Works a treat!

I still keep the Fibre as back up but this is my #1 now.

I changed style a little bit. I've been letting my hair grow a lot longer on the top and front, and been cutting it alot shorter and with more taper on the sides and back.

I based this cut off the one Howard wore throughout the Hell's Angels portion of The Aviator.

(It's pretty messy from the wind in these last four)

I'd like to think of it as an early 30's airplane pilot sort of look, but really it's probably more 50's than anything. Buzz from Rebel Without a Cause had a pretty similar style...
