Say Bogie, you're really getting into the era eh? That makes me happy to hear that. Say, I still have that radio if you'd like to buy it off of me.;) You'll just keep on wanting to fuel the fire my friend! Soon, modern anything will lose taste and you'll find your self as I; living in an era full of grace and class.

some clown in jeans, a t-shirt and a baseball cap. The icing on the cake were the shower shoes; and he insisted on sitting with his chair pushed back from the table, with one leg crossed over the knee

Enrique Iglesias? What was Anna Kurnikova wearing?

Vintage is just a way of life for me.
Except for socks, undershirts, I havent owned any modern clothing in a long, long time.
(except for some work clothing I wear when Im doing car work or cleaning)
Its been like this so many years, Im not in the least,...self concious about it. I dont even think about it.

Me and my friends were very self concious at first,...when we started out,..because you instantly stick out in vintage duds,..in a very particular way.
Especially when everyone today,..really is,...dressed like pitsville.
But the pull of the music, the cars , the duds, the furniture....its too strong.
And before you know it,...youre cruising down the avenue in your vintage wheels, in your suit and shoes, blasting some fast jazz,....and theres no turning back.

Heh, heh.

Save it for Sunday school.

I wear my suits to church mainly, as I get tapped to assist with ushering, with Communion and helped the Pastor with a Baptism last week. I will wear one to the right parties.

I don't wear suits to work as I work with auto parts usually and have to run out to the warehouse a lot to assist customers. When I wear GOOD clothes to work invariably I will get them screwed up. I'll wind up with dirt and grease on them or catch them on the equipment or racks and shelving and tear them up. I tend to be unlucky that way, I ruin good clothes regularly. My Tux has a cigar or cigarette burn in the collar right in the middle of the back and I know... I didn't put it there! Was it an accident or some aggressive a22hole out to ruin my Tux?

I wear jeans when I am going to get dirty, and Hiking shorts when it is hot, please remember that all of Southern California is a DESERT! Don't tell me it's a dry heat above 90 degrees I am in my own puddle of sweat.

I don't wear a lot of T-shirts anymore, I prefer the golf or polo shirt or a Safari type shirt with epelets, so I am wearing a collared shirt. I do like to wear chinos more, these days, too.

I'd love to get a linen suit some time for the warmer weather. All I know is to often they try to sell me a dress shirt that has too tight a collar, hey I rather be able to breathe!

Im quite in favour of the modern trend of dressing in just about anything you want. Consider the 30's and 40's when any man without a hat was seen as odd, or worse still, no shirt and no tie, no job! I think we are heading more and more into an era where you can wear just about anything, its just that we here are on the sharp end of a new wedge pushing smart attire into the acceptable, as women pushed the short skirt into acceptability some years ago. I used to make comments to my wife about other people in the street, whereas now I dont because Ive come to realise that they are doing what I do but in their own way. The UK is probably one of the least smart dressed countries in Europe and yet if I walked down the street in a suit just about any time of the day or night in any town or village no-one would care and just about all would consider it very smart. Putting a hat on it does push a little into the costume affair however I dont put the whole 30's and 40's thing together because I dont want to look 30's and 40's, I want to look like a modern guy in smart clothes and a hat. However time has taught me that if I see someone in entirely 30's etc garb then I keep my mouth shut unless its positive.

I do occasionally get a comment from people I know, and a few looks from people in the street (oddly middle aged guys are the worst!) I dont enter into debate with work colleagues etc anymore, I just say, "Sorry mate, I forgot you were boring." Then move on to another subject.

I will say that in my line of work youre either in full uniform or smart attire. Some of the non uniform staff depending on their work just have to dress like the average joe because they need to blend in seamlessly, but Detectives wear suits, or at the very least a shirt and tie.

I wear suits when...

...I don't want people to see that my shirt's wrinkled.

(Just kidding, mostly)

Last summer I went for a motorcycle tour from Washington DC to Mobile, Alabama, to meet my lady friend's family. For the event, I took along a very smart grey-and-tan seersucker suit and old grey fedora. That's the way I dress at home, so I figured I may as well meet them in my usual clothes instead of in the all-leather I wear on the bike as a matter of safety and practicality.

So when the time came to go out for dinner with the family, I put on the suit -- and I believe I was the only person in the joint wearing even a jacket, much less a suit. At least my lady likes it! However, later that night, we met up with some friends and went to a martini bar (without going home to change), where the folks in T-shirts were distinctly out of place. Vindication!

Of course, to this day my lady friend reminds me that I'm the only person she knows who could get away with wearing motorcycle boots with a seersucker suit.

I like that look, because it shows that you can be well dressed and modern, which means that dressing well is not dead, it's not something that belongs in the past.

Great Topic

I have worn a suit most of my working life. Even in summer I would at least be carrying a jacket in case I needed it. In winter it was always a 3 piece suit, and I got a reputation for being the " 3 Piece Suit Guy" which I liked. Always wore a tie minimum. Then in the 90's business casual came in and I still resisted and wore my suits. When I finally crumbled to business casual on a friday it was always trousers and an open neck shirt.

Now I work in a very casual environment and at the moment it is very hot so I am in trousers and an open necked shirt most days. When winter comes along which is soon down here then the suits and ties come out. We have a tie club here where those of us sick of jeans and tshirts wear a suit and tie in the winter, and I am happy to say that the numbers are slowly growing.

I haven't worn my vintage to work, well I have to black tie do's but my next suit and tie job I will wear my vintage one day to see what the reaction is. It will be a three piece of course.

Cheers

I wear vintage all the time and have done for most of my adult life. But whilst I have many nice suits I see them as just one aspect of my wardrobe. In fact I only wear suits on special occassions like parties, evenings out etc.

One of the things I like about this site is the variety of people it attracts. Some of us are into vintage generally, others more into modern "smart" or "classic".

Sorry, to me jeans just don't go with suit coats. In my mind it's not being modern with a classic twist, it's just bad taste. Khakis or a good pair of corduroy is a good alternative to jeans.

Just my too bits. ;)

I think the pocket square throws the look off a little.
I see the hanky as the finishing touch to a slightly more formal or simpler outfit, like for a suit or a jacket and slacks.
Everything from the waist up is done smartly. Personally, I think it looks like you got up, got dressed in the dark, and happened to put on the wrong pants for your suit.

I love suits. The suits I own form the most versatile part of my wardrobe.

I wear them every single day -- not just on formal occasions. When I want to be casual or sporty, I wear tweeds and cords, or trousers and a blazer.. I like the variety that these combinations offer, but to me there is nothing more becoming for a man than a suit.

It's true that suits are more time-consuming and difficult to care for than other types of clothes. Nor can many afford a large wardrobe of suits. Personally, I would rather have just a few well made clothes, and hold on to them longer, than purchase cheaper and less attractive clothes that I have to replace often. A well maintained suit (especially of heavier fabric) can last for years.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comparing new suits to old is another matter altogether, and I've already drifted far from the original purpose of this thread; but since I am new around here I want to take the time to applaud fellows like Wild Root and Matt Deckard who have embraced the old styles and wear them so successfully.
I used to collect 1930's ties for fun, but never to wear. I would just take them out every now and then and marvel awhile at the abstract art deco designs and vibrant colors, putting them safely away afterwards. However, the two of you have inspired me.. I've purchased a few vintage suits and started to wear them with my ties. The construction, durability and fabric of these old suits amazes me!
I think I have seen this sentiment expressed on the forums before, and I strongly agree: when you wear a vintage suit, you feel DRESSED. Even my most humble, patched up and rewoven 1940's double breasted puts any expensive designer suit I own to shame.. I've gone vintage, and I won't ever be going back.
Larry McMurtry
Speaking of jeans with a suit, what is up with Larry McMurtry, the producer of Brokeback Mountain, wearing jeans with a Tux! I mean the askew bowtie, normal white business shirt and bad glasses are bad enough, but jeans with a tux. He looked like a slob.
Maybe the stars he works with should take pity on him and lend him their stylists. Even at the golden globes his tie was askew and his collar turned up on one side. If I was possibly going to be seen by billions, even hundreds I would make sure I was impeccably dressed. Get that man help
Other than that I thought there was a return to classic style for most of the men. It looks like black tie is on the rise again.
Cheers
Totally calculated to try to PO anyone that has any concept of this type of event having relevance that they need to show reverance to. In other words, he's the class clown and is incapable of being serious about anything for any length of time, SO he's trapped in the past in a clown suit, living life as a clown in clownish ways. Pity him he does have potential, it's just being squandered making clownish actions.
Well written! It's astonishing that in a city of such magnatude, NYC is now the residence of the reverse snob slob. A welled dressed man gets the short shrift over cookie cutter convienience dress. The world is indeed shifting towards madness. Suit and ties will be consined to the ash heap of convienience.
It just does not seem right.
