Not sure where you are getting news of 6. This is from the World Health Organization.

Key word there...'beleived'.....

Kamikat was rightly saying -confirmed- cases....

There is a huge difference between counting everyone with flu-like symptoms as confirmed cases....only blood tests can confirm that its not something else.

In fact....

The World Health Organization said the number of confirmed H1N1 cases reported to it jumped overnight from 148 to 236. Dr. Keiji Fukuda, an assistant director-general, said the biggest part of that increase was from Mexico and resulted primarily from lab workers making their way through the backlog of stored specimens, not from new cases.

Fukuda said the number of confirmed cases in Mexico rose from 26 to 97 as technicians cleared away the backlog. To date, he added, only seven of the 176 influenza-related deaths in Mexico have been confirmed to be H1N1.

No. I don't wear gloves in cold weather. I don't wear gloves gardening. I don't wear gloves when coloring a client's hair, unless I'm using bleach, which I'm allergic to. I don't wear gloves when I'm tie dyeing. I don't like the loss of feeling. I don't see myself wearing gloves because of the flu.

I don't get how wearing gloves will help. The virus is airborne, plus if your gloved hand comes in contact with the virus and then you touch your mouth, nose, etc. what's the difference from not wearing gloves and touching your mouth?

The point of washing your hands is to keep the germs that get on your hands from coming into contact with your face, right? It seems that if you're worried about flu contamination, wear a mask.

About the flu, like Kitty says, don't buy into the panic. Unfortnately, it seems like American media are really good at creating a feeling of panic. Too bad you guys don't have any proper public service channels. Over here, the public service media especially, is trying to calm everyone down. I'm glad to hear that all of you are not buying into the panic. Just take it easy, the only special thing about this flu is that it's mutated in such a manner that it's contagious from one human to another, and not only from pigs to humans. Which in itself is serious enough, but it does seem like it's controllable. We are still only in the pre-pandemic phase, and the word pandemic doesn't mean anything as bad as it sounds like. It actually seems like it's curable with regular flu medicine (Tamiflu), I think they actually know for a fact that Tamiflu cures it. At this stage, it's completely curable, but of course it can mutate further. Who knows. Right now, there is no need to panic at all.

Finally, about wearing gloves to keep off the flu: Influenza virus, in general, is airborne, or can be transmitted through direct contact with secretion from an already sick person (only from their airways). Gloves are not helping you any bit here.

Or try to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. That's a good practice in general.

Well put. Those of us who remember the swine flu hype in 1976 know how easy it is for these things to get built up to far more than what they are. More people died from the vaccine then than died of the actual flu.

Just use common sense, and this media frenzy, just like all the others, will pass.

And as for vintage gloves, who needs a *reason* to wear them? Wear them because you *like* them!

Also, wearing a mask won't prevent *you* from catching it. It would only prevent you from spreading the germs to others. I for one won't be wearing gloves or washing my hands more than normal (which is after the loo and before eating). I travel on sardine-packed commuter underground trains twice a day - if I'm going to get it, there's not much I can do about it!

I would think a perfect time to bring gloves back in full force.

ok, I am not in the least worried, concerned, freaked out or paranoid about the Swine Flu except to the extent my grandchildren and keeping them safe as they are nearer to the border than myself.

I would of posted somewhere besides a vintage board to chat about the situation in detail with others if I was having an all out fit over it all or completely losing it.

As there are many vintage sellers, collectors and yes buyers on this board that like or love gloves and glove wearing I just thought it would be an opportunity to take the glove wearers and gloves out of the boxes and into the mainstream. I do think glove wearing adds to sanitary practices. I flew alot this last winter and did wear gloves in airports and such and felt safer.
Maybe just in my head but I would not think wearing gloves would hurt.
So it was more like I will wear gloves every day if you will wear gloves every day sort of.
I posted without thinking about the consequences of my post.
Sort of like a light bulb tidbit of what to say on the FL. It happens alot. Especially in the morning when I have not had much coffee.
So sorry if I caused any panic or ill feelings from anyone. It was not my intention to do this but to ask once again a very simple ?

foofoogal - just my opinion, of course, but I think wearing gloves is less sanitary than no gloves and washing your hands. If you want to wear vintage gloves because you like them, great, but if you're wearing gloves because you think it's more sanitary, I think you're mistaken (unless you're wearing latex gloves and you wash your gloved hands).

The BBC should be sacked for their ludicrous, inflammatory coverage of just about anything they can fan a frenzy out of these days, and the government for using tax payer's money to fund an information campaign advising that people cover their mouths/noses when they sneeze!!

Would I wear gloves? Not to stop me catching Swine Fever, as I really don't see how it would make any difference.

As Fleur said you either get it or you don't.

Of all the vintage things I love so much, I always feel (personally) as though I am wearing a costume when I try to wear gloves or a hat. They just don't suit me and I am not comfortable in them. Sad too, I have a huge box of my great-grandmother's gloves in ALL sorts of colors. She was very fashionable her entire 97 years.

Interesting that in the "Every Day Women" thread, I don't notice too many ordinary ladies with hats or gloves, perhaps that was only when you had on your suit or coat? I think I will pay more attention to that.

So no, I won't be wearing gloves more.

Foofoogal, I think I understand your question better now.

No, I won't be wearing gloves more because I only wear them during the cold months anyway. I considered wearing summer gloves too, but if I decide to do that, it won't be because of the flu but because I want to prevent my hands from tanning and thus aging.

Slight derail, excuse me Foofoogal. But it's about gloves.

I have no luck finding ladies' gloves that fit, as I have ridiculously small hands and short fingers. In winter gloves I wear Youth-sized stretchy gloves.

Should I just wait until the after-Easter sales next year and buy little girls' gloves? When are fingerless gloves appropriate?

How do ladies with engagement/wedding bands wear them with gloves? Over the gloves? My wedding band will be a plain gold band but my engagement band is raised.

You can all point and laugh at me for being silly, but I really don't know how to handle the logistics of polite glove-wearing in the vintage sense.

i wear leather gloves in the cold...

I wear ski gloves at the snow...

Occasionally I'll wear cotton gloves to the races...

I wear my rings under the gloves

I saw a man working at a service station one time, who was wearing gloves - I presumed to protect his hands from the gas and grime... although I was then confused to see him eat a sandwich with his gloved hands... wouldn't you take them off? lol

In relation to swine flu, I probably won't wear gloves more often, although as it coincides with Australian flu season, and should it enter the country, I will be more careful with my coughing and sneezing and hand washing - but I was going to be particularly vigilant this year anyway as I have a month long holiday in August and I would hate to be sick for that. As of yet I am unworried
