Heh, I saw him play a surgeon in CSI:NY who may or may not have operated on someone suffering from that 'unwanted limb' syndrome, but I digress.

I watched the first season of Carnivale and loved the costuming and mood of the show, but kept wanting some kind of 'resolution' in the story.

In the second series, I just went with the flow and didn't expect to fully rationalise the fight between good and evil (from my interpretation, it was not about one of the Devil's staffers versus a Christ-like figure, although symbolisms referred to the situation as though it was). The storyline took many twists and turns, but seemed to inch closer to a resolution and allow the characters to be more honest, rather than simple generate a sense of 'this is deep with dark ambience, but it's not terribly relevant after all'.

I'm going to keep an eye on the DVD box set, as the documentary seems to detail how they created the dusty environment and costuming.

I watched both seasons when they were originally shown. Fantastic looking show. Had a very authentic feel to it. The main character, don't remember his name, that actor looked like he had just arrived in a time machine from the 30's.

They never really pulled the storyline together. They tied up some loose ends at the end, but not really very satisfactorily. Seemed like maybe they had a lot of really good, creative writers that never could quite agree on exactly where they were going with the story.

That said, I highly recommend it, especially if you like your period pieces with some mystical alleghorical type weirdness thrown in. Believe me, it's got plenty of that.

I just finished the first season

I watched all the DVDs and saw the end. I only have one question: wha?!?
Does the second season make more sense? It is not available on video.
I'm not picking on anachronisms.
In the interviews the filmmakers talk about it being good vs. evil. Is the kid who choked someone to death the good guy and the minister trying to do right for the children and immigrants the bad guy?
Okeh, that's three questions.

Carnivale

Hadn't seen mention of this one much, but if you haven't seen the HBO series Carnivale the folks here should check it out. It follows the colorful cast of characters in a travelling circus troupe as they cross the country looking for the next dollar.

Very good, very 1930's Great Depression Dust Bowl. The clothes, the way they talk, all very well researched.

And by the way, check out the book Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Also about a circus in the 1930's with some great period dialogue.

Speaking of which, dear moderators, what about adding a seperate section for BOOKS that take place in the 1930's-40's?

I adored this show. ADORED IT. It was my absolute favorite and was cut down in its prime. Brother Justin was such an interesting, complex character. I miss Carnivale. *sigh*

Yeah, me too, though being such a tough manly fellow I have to say I really really enjoyed it. ;-) Makes me question the sanity of executives that cancel a show after only two seasons.

By the way what is up with HBO cancelling all the good shows??? Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome ( okay, maybe that one was excusable..)

I think this is the third thread on "Carnivale".

Definately an interesting show. I won't air my previous complaints here.
Now that the second season is finally on DVD I'll have to see what happened.

CarnyCon Live DVD

For those major fans of Carnivale, you might want to get the 4 DVD set from CarnyCon, the 3 day fan festival held in April in LA. Lots of panels with actors, writers, props people, etc. Some interesting insight into the story as well as some hints about the future storyline from creator Dan Knauf, if and when the story is continued.

I enjoyed season 1, but I started watching season 2 on dvd and gave up. It was a little too heavy-handed with the mumbo jumbo, the circularity was annoying me and the battle between good and evil doesn't interest me anywhere near as much as the battle between not-really-all-that-bad and not-as-nice-as he/she-pretends. I much prefer Deadwood.

I'm willing to pick up the thread again though. Should I go back to it (I got as far as episode 3 in season 2)? Does it pick up? Does it come together? Does it satisfy?

If season two ends with a cliffhanger that will never be resolved I'll keep out, but if not...

Just got season 1 off of OFAS. Watched the first 4 episodes so far, the show is good, and the costumes are really great.
It looks as if it really is the 'dirty thirtys'.

I heard from a friend out in LA that there's talk of reviving Carnivale as a series on HBO. I'm sure these kinds of rumors pop up from time to time about a lot of shows, but just thought I'd see if anyone on the forum has heard this or any other good gossip related to the show....
