Worst Hat Bashes

Not to be a '1/2 empty cup' type of guy, but I find these incredibly bad bashes very interesting. Plus, I suspect some of you will love this. FDR and Truman were great hat-wearers, but their bashes looked wayyy too natural for me.

This one's from 1927 - Chicago Mayor Thompson with Gene Tunney. I'm certain this is intentional, because I've seen other pictures of Mayor Thompson, from other years, and they're all similar.

I think that's actually Jack Dempsey. But that's definitely quite a bash. I love the many shots of FDR with his brim flipped up.
I need to find a shot of Harry Hopkins. He was infamous for the condition of his hat.

You're right! That's weird, because I grabbed that picture off a LIFE magazine site that was a selection of Gene Tunney photos from their magazine. There used to be a link on each page to the rest of the spread, but it's gone now.

Protruding Brain Crease ...

OK here we go. I captured this one a few weeks back but don't remember the name of the film. Don't worry over that - just look and marvel.

WARNING: The Protruding Brain Crease is widely considered to be an extremely dangerous bashing technique. It should not be attempted by any but the most experienced and self confident, and WITHOUT looking in a mirror. Even a casual sidelong glimpse of one's own reflection has been known to drive even the most ardent fedora lover completely mad.

That hat crease reminds me of the critter out of "Naked Lunch"

It can also be perceived as, um, gynecological.

.

Marc, You have just revealed the most closely guarded of all hatmaking secrets! It's amazing how many creases are. Perhaps even more amazing, how few are not (i.e. open crown and Gene Autry's side dents with no center crease).

Never thought of that, but you are right...side dents and no center crease would not be a good discovery.

Here's one I think looks pretty bad, but I'll probably try it for grins - curious what it's intended to look like from the top.

I love that crease. We've discussed it before and the consensus seemed to be that there was a bit of artistic licence going on - it's probably nearly impossible to mold and keep a hat like that.

I'd call that "the Lurch", if you remember how he would remove a visitor's hat.

I would call that one "The Goose." Not after our fellow Lounger, but because of the back, or behind, pinch.
