McGregor Drizzler or Baracuta G-9...

Which is your favourite?

McGregor have been in business since 1921 and the Drizzler was originally introduced in 1947. It was recently relaunched with promotional material accentuating the jackets history:

The new Drizzlers are still 100% cotton, but they now have a checked lining (also 100% cotton) with a plain nylon sleeve lining and an internal pocket, but are essentially unchanged. One of the first items of vintage clothing I ever had was a light blue 50's Drizzler that I 'liberated' from my dads wardrobe.

The Barracuta G-9 has a slightly longer history, being first produced in 1937 in Manchester. In the UK it became the jacket of choice for skinheads in the early 70's, after being sold at one of the most influential clothes shops in London, The Ivy Shop in Richmond, which specialised in classic US fashion. The owner of the Ivy Shop, John Simons, called it the Harrington, after Ryan O'Neals character Rodney Harrington in Peyton Place who wore one, and the name stuck. There are now many rip-offs of the design to be found all over the UK, but John Simons still sells the original G9 in his shop in Covent Garden, alongside US labels such as Bills Khakis, Spiewak, Pendleton, Woolrich, Bass and Florsheim. (The shop is always my first stop if I'm shopping for shoes.)

Drizzlers retail at about $85.00 but brand new jackets with tags can be found on eBay for $19.00 in four different colours. Brand new G9s can be bought directly from Baracuta for ?Ǭ£135.00 in the UK and around $195 from various retailers in the US.

Personally I prefer the Drizzler. I like the rounded square design of the pockets, and prefer the buttoned cuffs and the elasticated waist on the Drizzler to the knitted cuffs and knitted waistband on the G9. Plus there's the nostalgia factor - my dad wore a Drizzler in the 50's - and the fact that the generic "Harrington" is very common in the UK, and G9 copies can be seen in every high street in the country.

So, over to you...

My old man had a suit by McGregor in the 70s that was quite probably the most scrape-your-eyes-out hideous suit I've ever seen. He bought it at a store called Little David's Big Idea, and I still remember the suit in all it's glory hanging in the closet with the Little David's cartoon face (the label stuck on the hanger) peeking out over the top.

Later, I had a vintage drizzler in high school that I wore until it fell apart.

So, nostalgia wins here too. I'll look for a dark blue Drizzler.

The Drizzler is a very nice jacket, but i have wanted the G9 since my school days. Never got one back then. So the the G9 is my favourite. Didn't know you could still buy them, so will have to get a G9 one day soon.

The only new drizzlers I can find are 65% polyester & 35% cotton:

There are a couple of eBay stores selling new 100% cotton Drizzlers - NJ Power 2000 and Kitty In The Rafters. Since they are active Buy-it-now auctions I don't think I'm allowed to link to them, but if you search for "McGregor Drizzler" you'll see NJ Power are selling them in 4 colours for $19.00, Kitty for $19.99 and only in Tan. I got one from NJ Power and the tag definitely states it is 100% cotton.

Harrington vs Baracuta G9

Is the Harrington jacket the same as the Baracuta G9? I just bought a Harrington in wine red on Ebay and am waiting for it to arrive. It appears to be the same jacket with the same plaid lining.

Yes, it's the same jacket, although not all 'Harringtons' are made by Baracuta. There are plenty of copies around. See my first post for an explanation of how London clothes seller John Simons started calling the G9 a Harrington, and have a look at Johns own explanation for confirmation.

Orvis advertises Barracuda jackets under their label in red, navy, and khaki, as well as tweeds. I purchased one of their wool tweeds and like it very much.

I had a black Harrington in my *ahem* more closey-cropped years back in the mid eighties, purchased in London. Now, whenever I see one I think of the Cockney Rejects' epic song "Oi! Oi! Oi!". In it they chime, "So put your boots and Harrington on and kick down that f****n' wall!"
Them were the days...

That makes me feel old. I also had a black Harrington - a cheap knockoff from a local clothes shop - but my "closely-cropped years" were as a 13-year old suedehead in 1971. I always wore brogues or loafers rather than boots though. Still do wear brogues and loafers come to think of it...

I'm now thinking that the Drizzler is the type of (red) jacket James Dean wore in Rebel Without a Cause.

Dean apparently wore a McGregor Anti-Freeze in Rebel - there was a thread about it and I managed to find an old advertisement for the Anti-Freeze and it does look like that's the one:

I've been scouring the web, but have had no luck finding an Anti-Freeze anywhere. I've made do with a Land's End red cotton windbreaker - it's not quite as shiny as the McGregor, but it's a close approximation and it only cost £10.00/$18.00.
