Makeup to go with purple??

I'm wearing a deep eggplant vintage inspired dress, and the bride has "suggested" I get out the marcel wave iron. Which is fine. But I'm not sure what to do makeup-wise, since the style seems to call for the traditional red lips, etc., but red lips with a purple dress sounds scary looking. Any suggestions, color-wise?

I think the right red lipstick, more berry than tomato red, would look great with eggplant. I wear a lot of eggplant and burgundy and I like to wear either a medium rose lipstick or a deeper berry red with it. I'm sure you're going to look smashing.

MAC's "Glam" lipstick has a pinker undertone to it and I wear it with many clothing items that wouldn't look good with a traditional red. Sometimes I mix it with pink, as well. You could also just try a regular pink lipstick - it's still vintage accurate, you know!

I could do a berry-that's a color that works well when I do regular modern makeup. I was almost thinking I should go the opposite route and try a peachy coral to contrast with the purple?

If you do a google search on Dita von Teese purple, you can see her in many different purple dresses and she always wears red lipstick! It can hopefully inspire you for colors :)

I'd agree with most of the ladies above and say go for a maroon-y/berry lipstick and don't be afraid to try plummy coloured eyeshadow either. That's a very period way to match your makeup to a marcel wave in a 20s/30s style and should work for almost any eye colour.

I would say that a neutral eye makeup (beige base shadow, taupe in crease, black eyeliner), cool toned light blush (MAC Dame) and a cool toned lipstick (MAC Russian Red, Makeup Store Devil, Besame Red) and you're good to go!

This look is gorgeous!

I don't at all think that red lips and purple clothing are scary together! Depends on your coloring, but if you can wear an eggplant color dress, then you can also wear the red lipstick with it!

I also meant to say that I don't think (on myself!) that I would go with a too berry colored lipstick, it would match the dress too much and wouldnt stand out like a beautiful pair of red lips would..

Why is she always so lovely looking,

anyway I think a dita style make up is perfect with purple dresses
I wear a lot of purple and at the moment I own just one red lipstick (cleaning up old stuff) and it is russian red by MAC.

please ignore the glassy, stoney eyes, i was all kinds of high on some sicky sicky cold pills :/
but IMO red lips looks good with purple as red is in purple.

So, I've got my lip and cheeks worked out- now I'm stymied with eye-makeup. I'm wearing a very deep berry (better on me than true red) and a LOT of very pink blush. (Silk naturals in Tarte Light) Should I leave my eyes bare? Smokey eye? Purple? I don't like liquid liner on me (I have very round eyes and it just isn't my most flattering look). It's an evening wedding if that makes a difference.

I should probably add that I'm strawberry blonde with blue eyes and very very pale pinkish skin. So I don't have the contrast of dark hair/dark eyes/pale skin like the lovely Dita.

I would do gray on the eyes, to be cool and cooperative with the purple and a touch more "there" in photos than natural browns, if that makes sense.

I tend to wear a couple of shades of gray at once, mixing eyeshadows, with one of them actually being fairly blue, but toned down by the others. With an eggplant dress you could use a touch of violet and then the grays/silvers so the purple is almost subliminal, not WOW PURPLE EYES JUST LIKE MY DRESS which would be scary.

And for you I would skip the eyeliner, just do the shadow and some black mascara. You might even do brown-black mascara normally, since you're so light (I am too) but I think I'd glam it up just a touch with some black mascara.

A grey or dakr brown liner would look good on you. It doesn't have to be liquid, but you'll probably need to wear some sort of eyeliner. Especially as the wedding is in the evening, but also because wedding photos make people look so stark.

If you're going with a dramtic lip, I'd say go more neutral on your eye. Browns would be a safe bet, and I believe brown eyeshadow compliments blue eyes. Almay makes a color system for specific eye colors which includes shadow, liner, and mascara. You could always use the one for blue eyes if you really become stumped.

One vote for shadow no liner, one vote for liner no shadow. :eusa_doh: I do need to be cautious with dark liner- with my face shape and coloring it can make me look kinda geisha with the red lips and pink blush.

False eyelashes?

I would go gray shadow with a little purple. No liner, it sounds too heavy for your coloring (and I know what you mean about the round eyes - I have them too, and can never wear liquid liner).

And I say yes to the false eyelashes, but not too huge of ones. It's easy to go over the line from wedding to burlesque stage.

Don't forget to take pictures for us!

Have you thought about gold? When fall comes around, golden toned makeup looks lovely on most complexions. And with purple...it's like BAM! I would suggest a vintage style makeup...a neutral base on the lid with a shimmery brown in the crease. Then a deep plum or black liquid liner, winged out slightly. For the cheeks, I'd do a combination of a bronzer and a plummy pink and then a scarlet with golden flecks for the lips. It will all have a very dewy effect but still look smooth and classic. :)

Hmmm, perhaps I'll do a tutorial...haha!
