Platinum hair question...

This is my experience with at home. I love dying my hair red, but always get tired of it and dye my hair back to blonde and it does take a lot of money and effort even if you do it at home and I've never tried to go lighter than a 9. For example, a few weeks ago I used color fix twice to get rid of the red in my hair and it made it a sort of 10g with a little orange. This was without additional bleaching, but my natural color is a 9n/g so ymmv. Also, it is pretty damaged for all the dying and the color fix. After that I toned it with violet protein filler and it became a beautifully wearable color, maybe a 10n/g. This worked for me, but I imagine you would need to bleach it afterward and you would need to wait at least a week between bleaches. I've deep conditioned several times and its actually in decent condition now, but the orange is also showing through now.

If you do this, you'll need to worry about working against your roots and the red that'll stay in your hair Even if you went into the salon it would take forever and have to be gradual and be very damaging. I did that once and $200 later and can tell you I got the same, but longer lasting results and home. When I went to the salon, the orange showed through after 2 weeks, with the at home products, it lasted almost the whole month.

That said, you should totally try it to see if it will go with your head. A lighter red would be a nice interim step to see if you even like going lighter. It would be bad to spend all the money and have all that damage to your hair just to hate it.

You know, they have some really nice wigs nowadays, I have a friend who is trying to grow her hair out from a pretty disastrous haircut and she got a wig that looks really great on her and looks really natural. Have you tried that taaz.com to see what different shades of blonde look like on you?

Grant Fan, while I was in beauty school, I earned extra money as a hair show model. My hair has been every color under the sun. I have also done alot of hair show hair. My recommendation is to not do it if you are attached to your length. You could try an experiment at home to see if it will work. Cut a small sample of your hair (all the way to the root, in the back, underneath so you can't see it's missing, tape one end together so you can hold it together), place it in some bleach (you can get bleach and a 30vol developer at Sally's) apply some heat with your blowdryer until it's as light as it will go. Rinse, then see how the hair is. If it feels fine, then do it. If it feels brittle and breaks easily, skip it.

I think with your hair having a tendency towards a red tone and the fact that the red hair you have now becomes you so well, that your skintone is probably not the best for platinum blonde but that a strawberryblonde would be more a better choice. I think the key to a good result with any color is that it goes with the skintone. E.g. I would love the red hair you have but that wouldn't look good on me because I my skin is such a cool tone. I say keep the red.

I really REALLY love the red on you. It looks so natural and works so well with your coloring. I've been platinum for quite some time, I'm naturally a dark blonde - and it's a lot of upkeep. I do mine myself using professional supplies, and I have to do my roots every 5-6 weeks... which can get very expensive if you're not able to do it yourself.

Again, the red is gorgeous. I'm currently lusting after strawberry blonde, wondering if I should take the plunge...

I *love* platinum hair! I just had mine dyed in September. I'm really a redhead, but my hair was dyed black when I had it done. The stylist was reluctant to do it, but I insisted. I had to sign a waiver and everything lol

Even with black hairdye already in my hair, the bleach just clung to it like it was meant to happen! The black came RIGHT OUT with no problems. My real red colour, though, was a bit of a problem. He bleached my hair 3 times and it still had a red tint to it. A few weeks later I went back to get my roots touched up and said I wanted to go LIGHTER. So we did it all over again. And now I'm pretty WHITE. I love it. It was super-expensive, though. And getting the roots done is expensive, too.

My hair can get dry -- it comes with the territory. I usually do pincurls so I don't even notice when it's too dry. Only when I air dry it and leave it straight will it get that "straw" feeling to it. I'm also having no problems with breakage.

The bright red looks awesome!! Is there a little thumbs-up face?

I went Platinum...

for about 4 months and It was fun while it lasted but its a whole lot of up keep and expensive to keep the way I wanted it (Jean harlow) I also went from bright red and I had been red for 11 years. It took 2 months to get the color I wanted, and at first it was more yellow blonde. I finally went back to red because, I can dye it myself and it doesn't cost nearly as much. What I hated most about having platinum blonde hair was that my touch up would only last a week and then my roots would start to show.... Not a look I am fond of. I say if you have the money for touch ups twice a month. Then go for it... just be warned that if you go back to red... the red fades much faster week to week. Good Luck!

I'm not platnum, but since I went the opposite direction to the dark brown/soft blacks I've noticed that my roots are more noticable and sooner than when I was on the dirty blonde/brown going red end of it.

If you do go platinum, be prepared to have to get your roots done A LOT! My hair grows exceptionally fast so I only get 3 days without roots and *should* get them done weekly, but I get them done about once every 3 weeks. I have horrible roots right now that I need to take care of. Oy!

LOL same here..I say every week ok i'll get my roots done..yet i get lazy and do it every 3-4 weeks
Thats the only really tough think about being faux blonde,the roots show even more.
